axeman, i think you will be surprised how civilized the belizians are, in spite of their poverty. they are proud, moral, clean, and friendly. i dont think many of them would sell their daughters. they would sooner toil all day breaking rocks. i found them to be very pleasant. i said hello to everyone i passed, and a hello & a smile was always the reply.

Thanks Jane, I'm certain they are...was'nt slighting Sanpedranos in the least, was only trying to point out how little we americans understand on the subject of small countries.

The best is yet to come...28 days and counting...I'm so looking forward to being in AC. I'm about fed up with the fast pace life here in DC...

When I was in AC we became friends with a divemaster. He invited us(8 people) into his house for dinner. I was suprised at the invite bc here we were "strangers"on this island and somone opened up their home to us. It was such a generous offer and all I could think about was that if this was Dallas I would not have been so generous bc of being paranoid that something could be dangerous in our big city. I will always remember their kind and thoughtful hospitality.

Checker,

Investigate the Mayan village home stay programs that are run of the mainland. Gales Point and Hopkins [Women's Co-op] and Mayan villages more inland.

We just returned from our second trip to AC and had a wonderful time with the locals. We rented a house on the beach so it was easy for me to return hospitality. One night we were treated to a Belizian dinner in their home...a couple of nights later I fixed them an american meal. Lots of laughs all around. The local children played in our yard and their mother saved me when I got food poisoning by brewing up a root that settled everything down in 1/2 day. Maybe it was easier to become friendly since we were not in a resort but a home, which meant we had neighbors. Whatever the reason, we had a wonderful time and will always remember the gracious people on that lovely island.

Poor Checker! I wouldn't blame you if you gave up on this bunch! This person asked a few innocent questions and got squashed in the mud. At least s/he had the interest and concern to inquire about local people. Instead of seeing it ALL thru those rose-colored Gucci's. Give it a break you guys! People are people wherever they are. Good, bad, ugly or not. There's a pretty equal share of all types thruout the world. With a little luck and effort you find the good ones, ignore the others and live and let-live those in between. You folks may have done a fabulous job at squashing one of the few meaningful inquiries that I've seen in a while.

Yes, My family and I have become very close with several local families in San Pedro, as a matter of fact we have one young man(from San Pedro) staying with us while he is continuing his education here in the states.
We try to contact our "local" friends before comming down to see what they need. These friendships that we have made have been formed over many years.

I am sure that we are no different than a lot of people who are part time residents or frequent visitors to San Pedro.
