Hi All,

Can anyone recommend the best/least expensive travel from Ramon's to Mambo's for about 25 people? I would need their e-mail address and/or their phone number if anyone has it.

I did a search but all I could find was the Boatward Ferry Schedule.

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide!

Mambo's is the restaurant at Mata Chica.

Thanks for your help, Marty! I have been e-mailing the people at Mambo's and they have been really helpful. They advised me of a $250 US flat rate fee for the round trip ride and I was just trying to see if I could find it cheaper with someone else.

Mambos is an amazing, amazing place! If you can't get a boat that's big enough to accomodate your entire party, SWIM! It is definitely worth it. Oh and make sure you get the molten chocolate cake for dessert.

Pier Lounge-

Thanks for your reply!

Do you have an e-mail address for him or know where I could get more info?

I was first told the flat rate fee would be $250 and now it's $260 to get from Ramon's to Mambo (and back) and that was on a water taxi but if there is something better out there then we may consider it instead.

JMK - Is the molten chocolate cake the souffle' that you are talking about? If it is, then we do have that on our little menu we will provide to our guests.

What else did you have? Any appetizers? Anything I should be aware of to definitely order or not order?

Well, just for fun I'll throw a wrench into this mix... Only take the water taxi about half that far (or less) and stop at Capricorn for dinner. Cheaper water taxi ride (they have one that will pick you up, but I don't know how many it will carry, and I don't know the cost), and the food, in my opinion, is exceedingly better than Mambo. No, I don't have any *interest* in Capricorn, other than eating there. For dinner for 20+, they may cut you a good deal on the water taxi -- but maybe not, too. It's worth checking out. The last person we took to Belize said the other day, "I'd go back to Ambergris, JUST to have that seafood pasta at Capricorn."

Just an idea!

Thanks so much for the suggestion, Kathy!

The Capricorn was our second choice for our wedding celebration dinner but we have spent so much time in e-mailing Mambo's (over a month) and trying to get the menu all sorted out that we are going to stick with them. (Not to mention that we are leaving on November 4th and I still have other wedding stuff to finalize.) [Linked Image]

BUT...we definitely are planning on going to Capricorn's. The menu looked awesome so maybe we can go there after the "wedding rehearsal." Yum!

For 25 people who will probably spend $35 per person with drinks $875. I would think the Marta Chica would send their boats to pick you up. We stayed at the Mata Chica and the food is good but better at Capricorn in my opinion. One of the problems we had when we stayed at the Chica is the water travel cost and the prevailing attitude that made us feel unless money is no object you weren't treated well. Restaurant is good but we ate mainly because it was $80. round trip for family of 4 just to go to town and eat. Just my 2 cents.

Joe,
I agree with you... I would think that Mata Chica would send their boat down for a party of that size. I'll bet it will be more than your estimate, if there are drinks involved.

One thing that I find puzzling on the island is the cost of the water taxi, and the apparent lack of competition to bring prices down. I hope that as more homes are built to the North, water taxi "competition" will happen. I know that boats, motors, maintenance, etc. cost bucks, but $60.00 an hour is a lot of money, even by U.S. standards. I know there are "down times" but whenever I have been there, the water taxi guys always got more calls while I was in the boat. They seemed to always be busy. Anyone have input about this?

I have been in contact with the restaurant manager and I did ask him if he would at least pick up half the tab of the boat ride as I am bringing a big party to him but he said that he cannot.

These are his exact words in the latest e-mail that he sent to me:

"We cannot afford, as I'm sure you can understand, to cover the cost of the
transportation of our dinner guests."

How far away is Capricorn from Ramon's and would we need to take a boat to get there? I will do a search on Capricorn to get everyone's opinion on that restaurant - the good and if any, the bad. Maybe we will change our minds if I can't find cheaper way to get to Mambo's.

try carpricorn@btl.net (I looked it up on this website)

You may find the same response from Capricorn, I don't know. But it is worth a try. Capricorn does still require a boat ride, but it is not as far. It is South of Journey's End, which seems to be the point where water taxi's take a leap in pricing.

It just seems so odd to me that a restaurant would not consider working something out on the transportation to get 20-25 guests for dinner... unless they are booked full every night anyway. THEN I'd understand it.

I have been reading this board faithfully for a while now, and I have only heard one person say that he thought Capricorn's dinner was anything less than excellent. (And he didn't like any of the food on the island). If you can work out the transportation with Capricorn, you will be very glad you did. At the very least, the boat ride will be less $$$ because it is south of Journey's End.

Good luck.

Okay, I have sent an e-mail to Capricorn to see what price they can give me for the roundtrip boat ride. Hopefully, it won't be so expensive and if it's not, then I will have to talk to my fiance' and go over their menu with him to see if we should switch.

The prices are quite similiar on the menus so it won't be like we are spending any more if we change restaurants. If we change, then the only thing is to try to get this all together before we leave on November 4th.

SCRIVIC -- OH OH!~ I see *STRESS" spelled all over your last post. Now, my last suggestion to you is this: STOP! Everything will work out all right! Don't worry about where you are going to take everyone to eat! (sorry about all of the !s) [Linked Image]

If you end up with take-out from Jambel Jerk Pit, or anywhere else... it will all be fine, and everyone will have a wonderful time... after all, they are on Ambergris Caye! Who can not have a good time?

Kathy, you are right! With less than three weeks before we leave and our wedding on November 10th, I think I am starting to get stressed!

But, that's okay...because with our wedding in Ambergris Caye it definitely will be worth it! And really, we don't have too much left to do...just trying to hammer out the transportation to the restaurant and some other little things. : )

Tammy --

You will be fine which ever you pick. We've eaten several times at both. Check to see whether Capricorn is big enough for your party. Mambo certainly is. And while we have always enjoyed the food and people at Mambo, I have to say that Capricorn is a remarkable restaurant for any local, both in the food and the people.

And, by the way, the jerk pit has great Jamaican food. My wife agrees, and she should know. Stop by sometime while your there.

I am still waiting to here from Capricorn about the travel fees to get to their restaurant. I asked Iraida, from Travel Tour Belize, her opinion and she also chose Capricorn and said that the restaurant would be perfect. So, I don't know. Maybe we will change restaurants, maybe we won't. I'm just going to wait to hear from Capricorn on their travel fees first before I do anything.

Thanks everyone, for your help and opinions on the restaurants!

Hi,
I own the Island Ferry, and had submited a quote on your group. As one of your repliers stated, the regular price per person is $10us one way.
I quoted a price for your group at half price which is $5us per person one way.
I realize that with as many people as you are trying to transport it will be expensive. One of the problems is that over 20 normally requires two boats, which of course doubles the cost with the gas and captain.
I realize this is expensive, but I cannot go lower than half of the normal price. As another replier said, if you choose a restaurant closer, your price would be half as much. I am happy to help in any way, and you are welcome to contact me personally through email.
Thank you,
Tom

JACKPOT!!! Island-Ferry-Man Tom, you are just the person I want to talk to! I have questions.

Will the Island Ferry stop at the Los Encantos Pier?

If not, will it stop at the SunDiver Pier?

Is it the same price (10 US) from Journey's End, as it is from Sun Diver (or anywhere north of Journey's End)?

How do I "catch" the ferry? Call? Flag at end of pier? or?

Thank you SO MUCH for answering these questions for me. I'd like to use the Ferry next time I come down, but I need to know more about "how".

Thanks Tom for your reply and also for the consideration that you are giving me to make the travel the least expensive for me as you can. I really appreciate the help!

My final guest count is below what we had originally thought. We had some people call this past weekend who were still a bit hesitant to fly so a couple of the wives are staying home but their husbands are going. So, we have a count of 17 so far.

We are definitely going to go to Mambo's. I do not have the time to make any changes for restaurants and I believe we will have a great time there.

I do not have your e-mail address but am curious as to how late your ferry runs?

Tammy,

You will have a great time at Mambos. Arrive early enough to explore the grounds and beach a little bit before dinner, if you can. And do order the chocolate thing for dessert, if you are a chocolate lover. They will know what you mean if you order, "the chocolate thing!" [Linked Image]

Tammy,

I know what you're going through having just tied the knot myself however, I did not have to do it at a distance to where I live. All I can say is that if you don't delegate, you may end up so wound up by the time dinner arrives that you won't enjoy yourself. This happened to me. I wanted everything to be perfect and more importantly all taken care of so nobody had to worry about a thing. The morning of my wedding I was delegating left and right because I ran out of time, I was so rushed and stressed that I almost passed out in the church. Try to get your wedding party to do things for you, perhaps your maid of honor could arrange to switch the meal because it sounds like you might want to now but can't because of time.

Whatever happens, good luck and perhaps us "honeymooners" will meet up with you "newlyweds" somewhere along the way - we are arriving on the 9th of Nov.

Hi Kathy and Tammy,
The ferry leaves Fido's going North every hour from 10am to 10pm. We stop at any pier that is safe or deep enough, which is almost all of them.
We do have discounted prices for groups over 7 people. Also, if there are mulitple trips I can give you a little more discount. I can also offer you other trips besides just a ride to dinner as a group. We are not allowed to take people as a "tour", but can take your group on a Sunset cruise, bar-hopping, or over to the next island, Caye Caulker for an excursion.
I can answer any other questions, and please email me at dolphin@btl.net, because I do not normally have time to visit this board on a regular basis, but only heard that you were having a hard time getting answers.
You will have a great wedding!

Hi Again,
To answer some of the other questions:
Although the Ferry's last trip is 10pm, we keep a water taxi on duty, and make trips at Midnight, 1:00am, 2:00am, and 3:00am on weekends or special nights. We will also make any other arrangement if a reservation is made. An additional $5bz is charged after 10am, and that is for the captain to make sure he shows up. It is difficult for him to work that late, and I try to make it worth his while.
Thanks again,
Tom
Yes, we stop at Los Encantos Pier, and it is the same price as Sundiver which is $10us. Journey's End is the cutoff point and is $5us.
The reason is that we have volume to Journey's End, and there are very few rocks, beyond that point, we have to be careful and risk damaging the engines on coral heads. Ask Mambo how many times they have damaged their boats and the cost, and you will begin to realize the cost of operating in that area.

Guess what, Kathy!

We've changed restaurants and will be dining on the veranda at Capricorn's!

We spoke with Annabel last night and what an extremely great lady! She was very helpful and said that I would have nothing to worry about. So, that's where we will be eating!

Tammy, that is wonderful, and you will love it! And you will love Annabelle, "the barefoot hostess".

Hint: Remind the women with long hair that it would be a good idea to "secure" it before going to dinner. If sitting with back to beach, the breeze will keep it in their face all evening if it isn't secured in a pony tail or otherwise.

If you like seafood pasta -- you should order it. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Tammy,
Well.... Capricorn also has a decadent chocolate dessert. Something like a warm brownie with gooie stuff all over it. [Linked Image]
