Belize has its first confirmed US Ambassador in 6 years. The US Senate on Thursday confirmed former Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan, to serve as ambassador to Belize.

President Joe Biden tapped Kwan for the role in December, and us news reports says she "skated through the chamber's confirmation process," without objection.

The State Department says, quote,"Kwan's extensive work experience at the U.S. State Department in public diplomacy and youth outreach and her work with non-profit organizations combined with her strong management and business skills make her a well-qualified candidate to be the U.S. Ambassador to Belize." Kwan has a Master's degree from Tufts University's Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. She is also one of the most decorated figure skaters in US History.

Kwan - who pushed for a diplomatic posting is quoted as saying, "Belize is full of incredible history and culture, and has been a tremendous partner to the United States. I look forward to working with the Belizean government on economic issues…and to address the root causes of migration."

Ambassador Kwan Coming Soon

The Charge d'Affaires also told us a little more about the next US Ambassador to Belize, Michelle Kwan. Belize has not had a US Ambassador in six years, and today, Leyla Moses Ones explained that they're looking forward to her arrival.

Layla Moses Ones, Charge d'Affaires

"We are extremely exciting about the impending arrival of Ambassador designate Michelle Kwan, everything that she represents in her excellence, in sportsmanship, her championing of youth engagement, her work as a diplomat and as a sports envoy for President Obama, all of this has paved the way for her ambassadorship to Belize. We're still working on her arrival details, but we'll definitely keep you updated but our team could not be more excited for this."

Moses Ones will remain onboard under the leadership of Kwan until her term ends in 2024.

In her first official meeting in Belize, U.S. Ambassador-designate Michelle Kwan presented copies of her Letters of Credence to Belize Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, and Immigration Hon. Eamon Courtenay.

Ambassador Kwan and Minister Courtenay discussed mutual regional priorities and working together to tackle a range of policy topics important to both countries.
