Hi all,
Just to clarify. It is not illegal to drink in public in Britain. It is illegal to drink in public or in a pub if under 18 years of age although 16 and 17 year olds can drink alcohol in a pub if eating a meal. Local authorities can introduce by laws to control public drinking but this is rarely done. Anywhere you go in the Uk you'll see people sitting on benches, riding trains or tubes and just walking around with a can of beer. Throughout the summer people take their bottles of wine to the park for picnics.
That aside, my family have a house in a dry county in Georgia - you can't purchase alcohol there or drink in public. I didnt know this and had a cold can of Budweiser while waiting for my step dad outside a hardware shop. Without fail, the local coppers stopped to have a word. I explained that I didn't count Budweiser as an alcoholic beverage but they had none of it. Had to resort to the old sweet talking eyelash fluttering stuff and that worked.
