Guatemala Opens Hospital with Cuban Aid-
Guatemala, Aug 4 (Prensa Latina) Cuba s Health Minister Jose Ramon Balaguer and Guatemalan President Oscar Berger are inaugurating a modern ophthalmology center in this Central American nation Friday, equipped and staffed by the government of Cuba.
Twenty-three Cuban professionals will work in the hospital in northern San Cristobal Verapaz, as part of Operation Miracle, whereby low-income people with eye diseases are treated.
Speaking at a press conference, Balaguer informed that the project has so far benefited over 256,000 Latin Americans, among them 2,000 Guatemalans.
He added that 30,000 Cuban doctors, nurses and technicians are serving in 68 countries, and expressed the Island s willingness to extend cooperation with Guatemala, where a 400-strong medical brigade is distribted among 17 provinces.
