Oh gosh Marty, I was reading your description of how to take the bus from Cancun, and I had a sense of dejavu coming on!

O.K. to answer dreamer's question, yes you need a passport to enter Belize, but if you're a U.S. citizen, you don't need one to enter Mexico. To bring your car in though, there are so many variable on that, you might want to check out some trip reports/travelogues here and on the web board at www.bze.net for personal experiences on driving a car through Mexico to Belize, its not for the faint of heart. //www.ambergriscaye.com/pages/town/quick.html has detailed information on arriving via car, etc. If you're a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you won't need a visa, you'll get your tourist card when you enter Mexico & Belize. You can stay in Belize for up to 30 days on a tourist permit that you get stamped into your passport when you cross the border in to Belize. If you want to stay longer you can extend 30 days at a time.

I've stayed at the Seaside Guesthouse in Belize. Its a small, quiet, safe place that you will probably want to make reservations for. They only have 4 rooms, one room is a bunk room but the whole place only sleeps 16 people. You share a batchroom. Its sparsley furnished, but hey for $15 a night, you get what you pay for. I would recommend it to the budget travelor. As far as taxes go, you have to pay your entrance fee into Belize which is .....? $15 bz? I think, then there is a 3.75 conservation fee? If you stay at the Seaside, it is within waliking distance to the Marine Terminal, or for a $2 U.S. you can take a taxi just about anywhwere in the city.

To answer choochoo's comment about sending the kids on the bus, I think its a great idea. They will get to see how the rest of the world lives (and maybe appreciate all that their Dad has done for them), and stop bugging you to buy them that new Ford Expedition. LOL! I would recommend getting Emory King's Drive Guide 2000, because he gives a mile by mile description of where you are and what you're passing through.
