Peter is quite right... McDonnell Douglas' MD-80 was first flown by Swiss Air in October of 1980.

The MD-80 is the second generation of the DC-9 aircraft. Essentially, it's a longer version of the original DC-9 with more lift, more fuel capacity, and updated turbo fans.
