In the brochure for Coral Beach Divers printed in 1972 ( //AmbergrisCaye.com/photogallery/100128.html ) it says "The reef is so near the beach of Amergris [sic] that experienced swimmers can reach it easily by snorkeling [sic]".

Still physically possible, but I doubt any diveshop operator would recommend that nowadays.
