Gales Point: One of the Most Unique Spots in Belize & An Effort to Save the Endangered Hawksbill Turtle
Gales Point, a tiny Belizean village located on an amazing piece of land in the middle of a glimmering blue lagoon, has a population of fewer than 300 people. Most are descendants of African slaves, brought to Belize in the 1700s for back-breaking labor - logging in the deep Belizean jungle. Runaway slaves, around the year 1800 made their way down to Gales Point. An area that today is incredibly remote - I'll tell you about our bumpy trek down there - but 200 years ago? I can't even imagine the journey. And for tens of thousands…maybe hundreds of thousands of years before even that…hawksbill turtles were visiting the shore near Gales Point to lay their eggs.

Into The Wild: 3 Places To Travel If You Love The Outdoors
Though Jon Krakauer rendered the phrase immortal in his nonfiction account of an ill-fated young man who ventured into the Alaskan wilderness, the allure of going 'into the wild' predates his book's 1998 publication date. (Though, of course, Alaska is featured on our list, because-why wouldn't it be?) We are starting our list in Central America, in the (criminally underrated) and devastatingly lush country of Belize. With its vivid combination of dense jungle and the Caribbean Sea, the wild beauty of Belize is reminiscent of Tulum ten years ago-before the influencers, and the pervasive house music, before it became one of the most well-known bohemian getaways on the planet.

Climate change, human activity lead to nearshore coral growth decline
New research from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill compares the growth rates between nearshore and offshore corals in the Belize Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the world's second-largest reef system. While nearshore corals have historically grown faster than those offshore, over the past decade there was a decline in the growth rates of two types of nearshore corals, while offshore coral growth rates in the same reef system stayed the same. Coral reefs are a critical source of food, income and storm protection for millions of people worldwide. Nearshore corals grow in warmer and more nutrient-rich waters than their offshore counterparts and, because of their warmer temperatures, are believed to give a glimpse into the coral reefs of the future. This growth decline leads researchers to believe that any previous environmental advantage that came from corals being located closer to shore has now diminished.

Dengue kills 720, affects 2m in central America
Central America is grappling with its worst outbreak of dengue fever in decades - and scientists say the disease is likely to spread and become more frequent in the future due to climate change. Worst hit is Honduras where about 109 deaths from the mosquito-borne disease have been recorded, many among children, making this year's dengue fever outbreak the deadliest on record in the Central America nation, the United Nations noted. Also hard hit in Central America are Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala, with other Latin American nations such as Brazil, Paraguay, Colombia and Belize also affected, according to the Pan American Health Organisation.

Isotopes in poop show where secretive jaguars hunt
How do you follow a predator so elusive that its nickname is "shadow cat"? To track secretive jaguars in the forested mountains of Belize, the University of Cincinnati turned to geology and poop. Brooke Crowley, a UC associate professor of geology and anthropology, can trace the wanderings of animals using isotopes of strontium found in their bones or the bones of animals they have eaten. This method works even with long-dead animals such as ancient mammoths. Now she and her research partners are applying the technique to jaguar poop, or scat, found in the geologically diverse Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve in Belize.
