We never have found a golf cart necessary. We bike or walk and sometimes take a taxi, which are very reasonable. We did rent a golf cart for a day once to explore the island, didn't have much appeal, but then I am not in a hurry when in San Pedro. Where are you staying? If you are in town or close you might want to just go it a day or two with out the cart-just to see what life is like without wheels. Enjoy!!
