How about you leave the shells and fish where they belong and just take pictures???? Think of each person taking home a nice 'souvenir" to show off to all their friends...... you would all destroy yet another beautiful country. If you love the shells so much... come back and visit again. They will hopefully be there when you get back.

S&R: With all due respect: Would you go to Alaska on a fishing trip not to bring back any fish, say like Salmon or Halibut? Bet you're not too keen about hunting either. Maybe even vegetarian? A member of GreenPeace? Don't get me wrong, way too much devastation had happened all around the world due to over-tourism practices, and once-beautiful places turned not so. But I rather doubt that one or two dead shells found on the beach or several edible fish will deplete Belizes natural resources. Have you even seen the pictures of underwater landscapes with so much shell debris, someone wished they would disappear?

Hi scubaron,
It is estimated that there were 250,000 visitors to Belize in 2004. If each of those visitors took home 'one or two dead shells or several edible fish' I personally think that it would be quite destructive to Belizean natural resources.
...and no, I'm not vegetarian or a member of Greenpeace but I do have respect for the environment.
Take only pictures. Leave only footprints.

To Hon and Sophnramon: Points well taken, but the original question was not about the politics of removing precious relics but as to the "legalities".
PS: If each one of these 250,00 visitors left with sand in their cracks, or beach towels, would the beaches disappear?

Shhhhh...be vewy, vewy quiet. We're hunting wobstuhs.
Heck, between me and Jeff, we ate about that many BZ fish, lobsters and conch so far this year. You damn near have to beat the snappers and groupers and such back with sticks to go diving any more.
But I'll send the shells back. Lord knows they don't make 'em any more. :p
