Last time we were in Belize (Dec 2003) our credit card number was stolen and used for online gambling. The fraud dept. at Chase caught it and didn't pay a dime. Just a heads up to those that think people don't rip off credit card numbers. You may want to use travelers checks or cash in Belize for restaurant or misc. purchases.

does not , in itself, prove the theft occurred in BZE...could have occurred anywhere along the pipeline. Everyweek I see at least 2 fradulent cards come sliding by on the 'net. (And any reputable online marketer will have checks & balances on their card authorizing techniques.)

Just got back. Bring Traveler's Cheques. Hotel/Bank will cash them all day long. Plus it's fun walking around with all those $100 B-bills in your pocket.

As an operator, I can confirm that credit cards are currently bad news here. I have around $8000 in credit card receipts that I cannot get into my bank account. They are confirmed and supposedly safe, but that doesn't pay the bills. Visitors - for the time being please bring cash or travellers cheques.

Travelers checks, absolutly! cash them in at the exchange station and you'll get better than the two to one exchange.

I have been relying on ATM on trips to various places over the past several years because I liked the ease of use, but am strongly considering the traveler's check advice here. Just so I am clear - I will have no problem cashing the checks at a bank in SP? Hotel won't be an option as we are staying at Coral Bay Villas. Thanks in advance for the help.

Travelqueen, I thought you were taking me, LOL. Bring Cash and luckilly, no need to convert into Belize dollars, but it's always advisable. I had the hotel cash some USD and that lasted me awhile while traveling. I love to use a credit card and earm miles, but Cash is King. I always travel with enough cash to get me by for awhile in case credit cards do not work. I personally don't like travelers checks. You can't use a travelers check to pay for a taxi or that one-dollar bottle of water. Maybe for large purchases such as hotels or a week of diving, but plan for $100 cash/day for incidentals for food, water, taxi, tips and the like.
