Hello All,
Great board, it has been very helpful in planning our trip. Can anyone recommend to a family with young children , whether it would be less stressful and/or easier to fly from the city airport to AC or take the ferry? Thank you in advacne for any advice!

Flying it is. Thank you both for your help.
One last thing though - will it be a problem to purchase our tickets to AC when we arrive at the Belize city airport or should we purchase them now?

I asked the same question a little while ago. I'm arriving in June with three kids 5 or younger. Of all teh options we decided flying out of international was the way to go. It's a few more bucks, but I decided I'd willing trade some cash for one less cab ride and carrying/loading/loading kids and bags one more time.

He's sitting in an office 1 block from the beach waiting for the breeze to pick up so he can go windsurfing. Living the dream as the captain would say.

You can book online quickly and easily through either Tropic Air http://www.tropicair.com/ or Maya //ambergriscaye.com/islandair/ . I've never used Maya, but as captjeff noted with Tropic you can simply pay when you arrive in BC. Just be sure when booking your transfer to AC to leave a safe amount of time for luggage, customs, ticket pickup etc.

I can't believe that I'm saying this again...but---the departure time on your Tropic (or Maya) reservation to AC doesn't mean squat. Diddily, nada, nuttin'. They will take you to AC on a first checked basis and continue to fly until until everybody who is going to SP gets to SP.

I just checked the Tropicair site ( thx NJ and CPT !) and was real happy to see lots of flights and decent prices - thanks everyone for the tips!
Anyone finds themselves in Toronto area sometime ( hopefully in the summer), the first rounds on me!

Just in case you've not made up your mind yet (HA-HA) you might want to fly.
Incredible views. If your oldest child (and the pilot) is adventurous, ask if s/he can sit in the front seat next to the pilot. I've asked 3 times, and my wish has been granted each time. It's the only way to go. Make sure to give your child the camera.
Have a great trip!!!!

Some pilots will not allow photos to be taken from the co pilot seat.

One of the regular Tropic pilots, didn't question why, he's the captain. Might just be personal rule of his.

The muni is in the city. The Int'l is about 10 miles on the outskirts of town. yes, 2 airports in BC.

Hey OAKVILLERS.... I'm here in TORONTO!! :p when can we meet for that drink??... OK, I actually live in Toronto but have been to San Pedro (Belize) 8 times so far!!! Can you tell I have been bitten by the bug or want to live the dream as Captain Jeff says? As already stated, FLY... it so much easier, quicker and more fun, especially after travelling the distance to get to Belize and with kids (now I have never done that trip with kids but I know what an adventure it can be). And yes, it is cheaper to fly out of the smaller municipal airport, is it worth the "hassel" slepping your kids and luggage around? Priceless is the word to use to be there 'immediately'.. Have fun!! Maybe we can chat after your trip and share stories over that drink.. Gail

I know all the pilots and they would never say do not take a picture- in fact all I have ever seen is them look out for things for people to photograph- ps I fly a minimum of twice a week which leads to a min of 1000 flights since I have been here- last week we were flying from international to Bz city and the pilot saw Manatees in the river and we flew down to around a 100 feet for a better look and a photo session.

Okay - I know I am in the extreme minority here, but we took the Water Taxi last September and are planning on doing the same when we return this Sept. For starters - it was waaaay cheaper. Money aside, we loved that the view of the river and the surrounding area, on the way from the airport to the water taxi station, helped form our first impressions of Belize - our Taxi driver was extremely friendly and we got the tour guide routine our whole drive, including the 20 minutes or so we were stopped waiting for the Tiwanese dignatary to pass by in his official motorcade. Next, the water taxi station itself is worth the trip - right in the middle of the busiest part of Belize City, we took in views of street merchants, the Mennonites selling their furniture and the multitude of taxi drivers goofing around with each other and passers by while waiting around for their next fare. We bought the first of may bags of plaintian chips from the first of may cute kids, we chatted with locals about things to see and do, and we got lots of fresh air after being cooped up for far too long on an airplane from the left coast. Finally, the ride itself was more than enjoyable. It took about an hour and five minutes including a stop at Caye Caulker, where we got our first glimpse of brightly Belize colored buildings. We spent the entire ride chatting with a local who was a tour operator for one of the cruise lines and got the rundown on each of the Cayes and their respective history as we went past each one. We got a local's opinion about the best tours and the ride was long enough to provide time to learn a little something aobut his life and that of his wife and family. Plus, we got the added bonus of feeling the wind in our hair and getting a headstart on our tans. It was one of the best things I remember about our trip and I am looking forward to repeating the experience. That said, sixteen days later we took the plane back because we wanted to stay in San Pedro for every last minute! Just thought another view might be helpful. . .

I asked a Pilot out of interest why photography was not allowed in the co pilot seat when he asked me not to take pictures (even though I was only reaching for my sunglasses). He said it was due to the auto flash sometimes going off and the possibility of it causing temporary blindness and so, a safety issue.
