I agree that buying pot was stupid and one shouldn't complain about the trouble they got into as a result. The thread should be a comment on gringos breaking the law in a third world country, not the place they stayed at.

"BUT, I must say that in my town, if anybody, Belizean or otherwise, was seen smoking pot, they would have it confiscated, written a ticket for $100, and sent on their way..."

That may have been the case even a year ago but not now, ANYONE who even smells of weed is going to get severely harassed and if they find anything at all you'll end up thrown in jail. You're lucky you're still not in jail for trying to bribe a peace officer. This is a good warning for those who think they can listen to the dealers bullshit. Getting a phone call? That's a laugh! I had an employee held all weekend without a call for driving without an insurance sticker (the cart was insured.)

"And if you find you would like an illegal substance, the word around town is to talk to the bartenders and tour guides."

BULLSHIT!

When offered weed by street dealers ask them if they wouldn't mind coming for a ride and then tell them you have to stop at the police station for a minute first.

Quite frankly, i was waiting for more reviews of brianna's beach house. that is what we should be talking about.
everyone already knows buying pot is illegal in belize.
some trips we are approached daily. last trip in august i was never asked once. must have looked like a redneck that trip.
maybe the owners can work on the vendors & barking dogs a bit.

Rumor has it that the local cops are handing out more golf cart DUI's too. I wonder if you can get away with that in Canada. No more hazy, dooby smoking trips to town for me. I'll wait 'til I hit BC for that kind of foolishness.

I just say "No Thanks" & ignore them & move on, never had any one harrass me after those two simple words.
I do think it's much worse at Caye Chaulker, the only difference is they say "ok man" you know where to find me if you change your mind.
I love sitting at the Lazy Lizard drinking a cold one & enjoying the view at the split.

When I was there last year we got offered pot each time we walked by the library just north of Sunbreeze. Low pressure, non-threatening offers (usually while laying down on a bench).

When I was there this year I didn't see any.
