That's the law over here... think it's somewhat the same in your country. For tourists the police will be more forgiving... What do you want then - wrong information? Listen to the pros that actually live in Belize!

I actually saw a group of tourists walking around "brown bagging" it. Some store or bartender is thinking creatively.

As long as you're not acting like a drunken idiot and you have your drink in a haul your ass glass you're unlikely to get into any trouble.

Only a portion of the beach is 'public' - the Queens Beach. Don't recall how many feet back it is though. The beaches are pretty narrow in some places so could be that some areas are all public. If you're sitting on your porch or balcony drinking you won't be likely to get a ticket or anything like that. San Pedro is a friendly, laid back place overall, but please be considerate and don't put people in danger of drunken golf cart driving.

On our two trips there we brought thermal mugs (the cheap kind from Wal-Mart). They worked great for either ice water or beer. Most of the pools also do not want glass around them, for obvious reasons. The mugs also cut down on the number of smaller plastic bottles of water you would need, saving those for trips.
