Off subject -- but still about alchohol -- went to Maine couple years back and one of the B and B's we were staying in suggested we move to the back (we were on the front porch each with a glass of wine) out of view of the police as it is illegal to consume alchohol in public, and yes that means on the B and B's front porch. The owner got a ticket the first week he was there for drinking a glass of wine on his front porch! The name of the town is Bethel, beautiful place.

Hi all,
Just to clarify. It is not illegal to drink in public in Britain. It is illegal to drink in public or in a pub if under 18 years of age although 16 and 17 year olds can drink alcohol in a pub if eating a meal. Local authorities can introduce by laws to control public drinking but this is rarely done. Anywhere you go in the Uk you'll see people sitting on benches, riding trains or tubes and just walking around with a can of beer. Throughout the summer people take their bottles of wine to the park for picnics.
That aside, my family have a house in a dry county in Georgia - you can't purchase alcohol there or drink in public. I didnt know this and had a cold can of Budweiser while waiting for my step dad outside a hardware shop. Without fail, the local coppers stopped to have a word. I explained that I didn't count Budweiser as an alcoholic beverage but they had none of it. Had to resort to the old sweet talking eyelash fluttering stuff and that worked.

When you get to San Pedro you can walk up and down the shore where there are many beachfront bars. There are way more beachfront bars than there are actual beach parks. In fact if you walk along the shore for long, you will be so hot and thirsty you will probably have to stop at several! Check out the maps Marty has on this site. Belize it!

Wow, are we just talking about AC, or is public consumption prohibited throughout Belize? I'm under the impression that there are not a lot of beach front bars in Placencia and the southern cays. So, Jesse, what is the maximum penalty for having a beer on the beach? I may have to figure that into my vacation planning.

I bet this post deters at least as many potential tourists as the ones about violent crime! Talk about giving a negative impression.
