Oh no, now I have SIN to explain things to. They became "our" colonies once we kicked the British out. i.e. former British Colonies hence American Colonies.

How can you be or become your own colonies? The American Colonies of America? I thought colonies were like, um, other places that have been colonized? ha ha

I never knew the thirteen colonies were known as The British Colonies, wow, I thought they were The American Colonies (hence - owned by the Queen but across the ocean) and became the United States of America. Damn 3rd grade teacher!!!!
