Mexican cuisine has many regional styles.
The pork in masa tamale is not from regions near Belize, and apparently our local chefs have not developed a taste for them.

Neither the corn husks or the banana leaves are edible, although I suppose if you could choke 'em down they'd be an excellent source of fiber!
Personally, I like the corn masa w/ pork type and every Christmas get a group of friends together and make about 30 dozen.
I had the banana leaf type made by a Houdouran friend. They didn't have the chile and other spices typical of Mexican tamales and I thought they were pretty bland.
I've also heard of some tropical regions using avacodo leaves.
They're called different things in different parts of Mexico but other than tamale the only other name I can remember is "corunda" from the area around Michoacan, Mexico.

The ducanu name might be a Mayan word, not necessarily Spanish.

lenox862..sorry, but i had to laugh..spent some time in corozal and they have a guy driving around in his car with a megaphone on top, yelling "tamales, tamalitas, orange juice"...it took about 2 weeks of hearing this on a daily basis, before i realized what he was saying...thought it was some political thing!!!
one day a my friend carol was visiting, and we stopped and bought some tamales and tamalitos...saw the leaves and husks, and i didn't know if i should eat them or not...just watched to see what carol would do....she peeled them off...that's what i did..pretty good stuff...the tamalitos tasted like corn bread...and the chicken foot in the tamales, if you get one, u are considered lucky!

...but I really think at Estel's they make it with a chicken LEG... I've had it twice and it didn't look like no foot to me...

I'll check it out during my next trip down - soon! Woo hoo!!!
