Purchase money on black market?!?!
Every store, hotel, and restuarant accepts U.S. dollars at 2 to 1... and all are happy to get the green backs.

U.S. dollars are legal tender here, so why even worry about changing the money?

All stores accept US dollars, but if you want to exchange a lump sum of US $, you can only legally do so at the banks. I can't quite remember when the cambios were ordered to shut down.

I know they were no longer working in June, this year, at least not where they were in June of 2005. A combo of US$, a few traveler's checks, and debit card served us well this June, both on the island and inland. Credit card for the big stuff--hotel, big tours, rental car--everything else in cash. Island Supermarket now has an ATM machine! If the phone lines go down, no ATM, so be aware of that. Had a bit of a heart attack, when bank said we got $500 BZ, and we got nothing. It worked out okay.

I know U.S. cash works fine, my point was that travelers checks have protection that cash doesn't. I will be there in December with travelers checks and if I can't exchange them at the place that I exchanged them at 6 months ago and got more than 2 to 1, I will go to a bank.

when i came down the first time, i only brought travellers checks. every single store, every single bar, every single facility, person, restaurant etc took em. they asked me for my drivers license number, which i have memorized, i wrote it on the back and that was that.

if you are a AAA member in the US, they are free to get, and literally are as good as money here...

sooooo, cause of the petty crime rate, really you should use 'em.
