shelly, save your money for college, dear.

take it from one who knows, do not be frivolous with it. it is all you have, then you will have none. i know, i once was poor. eating p,b&j sandwhiches every night for dinner gets boring, fast.

and what will you eat? or wear? how will you pay for a car? or insurance? even public transportation costs money. or an apartment? will you live at home until you are 30? $800 doesn't pay for one month's rent here in PA. my parents saved for us too, but i dropped out & they wouldn't pay (that was the deal). i got a job and worked & worked. it cost my parents $100,000 to send my brother to 4 years of a university. do you think a scholorship will cover that? my neice is a merit scholar/athelete who is in her 2nd year of pre-med. she is 21 and broke. we give her money at xmas to get her by and we bought her a computer for school. who will do that for you?

i sound like a mom, but SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!

Let the girl do what she wants! She is young and what better time to have an adventure. When you are young, your experiences are the best teachers in life, experiences are more valuable than money.` She has the rest of her life to make and save money.
But Shelly: Remember that Belize has the highest AIDS rate in Central America and because it is not publicly discussed, many of its victims do not even know they are infected. And the highest growing population with AIDS is young people, especially young men. And I do not mean just gays and IV drug users, I mean cute clean-cut young straight guys.
You should assume that your young friend is carrying the AIDS virus and behave accordingly. (In fact, you should make that same assumption right in your home town...)
Sorry to be so blunt but it might save your life. It was much easier to be young and adventurous when I was your age than it is now....

susan, u r right. one must learn life's lessons their own way. i would not have listened to a single one of my words then. i was a pretty wild child. i have many stories to tell because of it. however, i learned many lessons too. big ones.

maybe part of me is hoping she won't make some of the same mistakes i did. i made some good ones. that said, i turned out pretty well anyhow.

shelly, you just seem like a nice girl. follow your dream if it makes you happy, but don't go in with blinders on. protect yourself and have a back up plan back home. save a little extra $$ and put it aside. keep your ties with mom & dad. good luck.

I am going to ask a question here.
Can 15 yr old with a passport, travel to Belize from the USA, without a parent or guardian traveling with them? If so scary.

I dont know but I doubt it. Immigration at the US side would likely ask for proof that she is allowed to travel unaccompanied. My cousin was 17, at university and needed emergency dentistry. The dentist needed written permission before he could touch her.
At 17 I applied for a US visitor's visa - unaccompanied. I was turned down because they wanted a parent to say that I would be allowed to travel on my own

Thank you to whoever it was who posted the info on http://www.flycheapol.com/centralamerica/defaultbelize.asp a few weeks ago. I just got a flight for $564 including taxes and the $40 booking fee from Oakland California to Belize and back. It's on Continental, but was half the cost of what Continental quoted for the same dates on its own web site.
