I noticed that Chloe mentioned Basenjis and I just couldn't help but pipe up. The classic Belizean dogs, one type of which looks just like ArtZ's dog are called 'pariah dogs' in Africa and many countries in the East. The Basenji is one type which has now been bred specifically for it's look....and one other thing...It is barkless. Interestingly it has been said that the Mayan people had a barkless dog at one time. There aren't many barkless dogs in the world, probably about three that we know of. Following the history and movement of domestic dogs sometimes leads down interesting anthropological paths.

According to my vet father, this is inbred in a pure bred Basenji. Emily looks to be part Basenji, so if she barks, it would not be unusual. Also am told that pure bred Basenjis do make a noise, but not a bark, per se. Didn't know this before this post - I thought every dog was capable of barking unless it was debarked.

LOL re "debarked". I would like to do that to some people. But, there is a surgery where they can take out the vocal chords of a dog so it doesn't bark.
