SJ: I already know statistics because I did some research on it. And you are right, there is NO comparison. Alcohol is by far the deadliest drug ever known and kills more people than every other drug combined known to mankind.

One out of every three drivers in the US will be involved in a alcohol related driving accident during their lifetime.
Traffic fatalities in alcohol-related crashes fell by 2.4 percent, from 17,105 in 2003 to 16,694 in 2004. Although this is definitely an improvement, it is still a lot of dead fellow citizens. To put this in perspective, it is equivalent to a fully loaded Boeing 747 crashing, and leaving no survivors, every nine days all year long - over 39 airplanes in total.
The 16,694 fatalities in alcohol-related crashes during 2004 represent an average of one alcohol-related fatality every 31 minutes.
NHTSA estimates that alcohol was involved in 39 percent of fatal crashes and in 7 percent of all crashes in 2004.
In 2004, 21 percent of the children age 14 and younger who were killed in motor vehicle crashes were killed in alcohol-related crashes.
An estimated 248,000 people were injured in crashes where police reported that alcohol was present - an average of one person injured approximately every 2 minutes.

there used to be an old joke (sorry, i tell 'em bad):
cop pulls a mellow stoned guy in a car over. cop says "son, do you know how fast you were going?" "no officer. i'm sorry. what did i do?" "son, you were doing 25 in a 45 zone".
ok, so it's not funny, but you get the jist. thanks for the back up and statistics, friends. (hey rykat, any comments?)
now, looking at the stats, why does this issue get so much negative press and no support? i think cuz the govt set it up so that anyone who thinks this way will most likely be under scrutiny, so no one will speak up. JMHO

SIN: You statistics do not even include the thousands of folks who die from liver failure, alcohol poisoning or other accidents involving alcohol - namely, falls. So, the statistics are staggering. Never see something like this in the paper or on the news: "Man dies in crash from smoking marijuana."

more like "man smokes weed, can't get off couch, doesn't work for years, still living with parents at 55 years of age." i know several that fit that scenario.

Boy, Timo - those folks must smoke lots of weed. I know people that are just the opposite.

I've seen both sides of that. I guess it depends on what kind of work ethic one has. I knew one guy that didn't smoke, and just drank a little. Lazy butt-head didn't want to work. Then I've seen one guy that took a few hits off a joint before he started work (home repair job) and worked like a mad man. He had his "smoke" breaks, but he did (and still does) wonderful work. He takes pride in his work. Like I said, depends on what kind of intestinal fortitude a person has.

i too know deadbeats who would NEVER smoke. yet i had a older friend who loved to take 2 puffs then clean her house top to bottom or completely redo her huge flower garden. knew a guy, smoked b4 work every day, earned well over 6 figures who thought it made him write code better, and almost never missed a day of work. i think dc is right, depends who you are by nature.
point is, i guess, i think dope gets a bad rap. i don't see what is so horrible about it that it is so taboo. lack of real knowledge about it? yet we turn a blind eye to the many perils of alcohol. paradoxical? i just don't quite get it.
