This is a question for those of you who live on AC permenantly and do NOT own businesses.

What do you do?

My husband and I have thought about moving there, but since we would not be able to "get jobs", we think we would go stir crazy after about 2 months. We are taking into consideration, that if we moved we would have our own boat for fishing (which we love to do). We have even thought about learning to dive. But we still feel that after about 2 maybe 3 months the "newness" would wear off and we would want something to occupy ourselves. I know people here in the states that have retired and do nothing but travel to a nearby town for lunch and go to the local club every night. This is great for awhile, but long term would drive me crazy.

So what do you do to keep your minds active? I would really appreciate some serious responses because this is the one thing that is keeping us from moving to AC.

I am under the assumption that without a work permit you can not even volunteer your time. Is this correct? Because I don't need a paying job.

Based on what I have observed, and I don't live there, complaining without offering substantial alternatives seems to be a popular past time of the selected demographic.

Thetre are plenty of opportunities for people to domate their time to the community in SP.

Stuff to do here is a problem. Especially if you are not a huge 'water' person or a huge drinker. Many people who move here become heavy drinkers simply because there is not much else to do. We lived here for a year planning on being beach bums the rest of our lives then realized we were stopping by BCs twice a day. We ended up getting part time jobs, not only to keep us busy but to support our diving addiction (plus its a heck of a lot more expensive than we planned). Oddly enough, 5 years later, work now occupies most of our time and I haven't worn my scuba gear in over a year!

Dog, I totally agree!!! Sad really!

But seriously, LuvHotRods, I come down frequently and sometimes need someone to entertain me! I love water activities, fine dining (I can sen you a list of my favorite places ), bars/clubs and just love to be doted on! Lucky you, you don't need a work permit and you won't get paid! Ha!

But even more serious, I agree that the "newness" would wear off soon. I find myself saying this everytime I'm down. Coming from a big city, there is not enough in SP to occupy my time. I would seriously go stir-crazy!

Just buy a "summer" place to visit every year!!

Been here over 20 years. Taught diving for 15, now I bartend, manage condos, clean part-time for extra money, visit other islands and the mainland. Go to Chetumal, Mexico once in a while for shopping. Visit the usa on vacation. Go out with friends who have boats. Too much to do and so little time!!!!!

Beachboy - could you give me an idea of the type of opportunities there are to donate time?

JZB - From every thing I have read, getting a part time job is next to immpossible. How did you manage? I would love to come down there and work 2 or 3 days a week at a bar or resort. ANYTHING not in accounting!!

Once you have your residency finding a job shouldn't be too difficult if you are not picky (as long as you don't take a job that most Belizeans qualify for) or start up your own business. San Pedro is gowing so fast, there are many 'holes' that need to be filed.

Wonderwoman, you also forgot to add taking wagers on the "Golf Cart Drop" to your resume...
