Alas, my rose-colored glasses broke some time ago. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." I don't dwell on it, but I refuse to forget and I'll never stop working to try and change things for future generations, even if only one person at a time. My guess is that our experiences and observations have been very different, thus the difference in outlook. The world needs the variety!

gee golly thanks, Mom, but no thanks. the rest is tired ...matching wits with you like shooting an unarmed woman...old, tired out cliches! But... there's hope for elitists(tired cliche) certainly more "dangerous" than nostalgia freaks...uh...no there ain't.

Well, variety is wonderful, and I welcome it. Law, I am very happy for the rest of us that you will fight for the "little person" and I will fight along with you, although in a different venue. I think my effort was only to allow an explanation of why some of us "wax nostalgia" instead of trouping into battle every moment of every day. Not that we don't want what is fair and just, but a retreat is a welcome diversion, and it is sometimes found in the recesses of our minds. Sometimes it allows us to "regroup" and sort out what is really important in life, and what isn't. Remembering our childhoods as sweet memories is not a bad thing, nor is it defeating the future.

I don't think Law is disputing that sun&sand. I think she is merely trying to point out that those happier, more simple times were only happier, more simple times because we were children. An actual return to the "good old days" probably wouldn't be as much fun as some of those waxing nostalgic may think.
As you say, remembering our childhood times, as sweet memories is fine. I've had my share of sliding down gravel piles too. Sigh, yes, indeed those were the days.
And in that regard, I do regret that the world has become such a place that a mother can't let her children go to the neighborhood park without adult supervision. So, in some regards I would return to that happier time if I could . . but what would we have to give up in order to return to that happier time?
Would one say that the world was really a safer place then? Or was it merely percieved as a safer place? The cold war with Russia, the Cuban Missle Crisis were frightening and serious times. My family lived near an airbase. One day that I specifically recall, I was looking after my younger sisters and a few of the neighborhood kids were over. Suddenly, all these jets started to roar overhead. A very rare occurrence despite our proximity. We were terrified, we thought it was the end. And then shortly after that, the president was assassinated. Then a bit later, boys started coming home in body bags from Viet Nam . . and then boys coming home from Viet Nam, were spit on and abused by their fellow country men. Yes, a happier, more simple time . . .snort.
But heck, all the while, I could freely go to the playground and park, wander out in the forest and fields, slide down gravel piles, walk across town and back and I only got heck if I was late for dinner.
Yeah, those were the days.

Seashell..I really don't think Law and I are disagreeing on anything. We both feel the same need to right the wrongs, but choose to attack the wrongs in different ways.
I lost a best friend in Nam, as well as two other close friends. I supported the guys in Nam then, as I do our guys now in the middle east, although I didn't then and don't now support the cause. I lived just on the edge of Andrews Air Force Base, and am well aware of how scary it was then.
I refuse, however, to let these issues dictate how I embrace life. If you can't see the sweetness in life, when all you see is the bad and hateful and evil, then your life will used up without knowing the laughter and fun. Not to say that you don't have your share of fun, but will you remember it when you are old? I think you will mostly remember the efforts you made, whether successful or not,the problems and issues, and not too much of the good. I think the poor mortician will have a difficult time getting the frown off of your face. I say take time to smell a baby head, sip a too sweet drink, let a puppy lick your face. Count your blessings. I'm sure you all have plenty. Our memories are involved in what we consider to be blessings. I happen to think I was blessed with a childhood that helped me to become a good person, parent/grandparent and a empathetic nurse. Law, was blessed with a childhood that helped her become a good attorney with concern for those less fortunate than most, and I'm sure a good citizen. This topic I'm sure wasn't meant to become a agree/disagree issue. I think it was meant to bring us to a happy place in our mind. I'm able to go there without letting go of reality. Hope you are, too.
