45TH ANNIVERSARY OF HURRICANE HATTIE OBSERVED
October 31, 2006

Today marks the 45 th Anniversary of Hurricane Hattie hitting Belize. The death toll reached three hundred and seven. Hurricane Hattie formed on October 26 and reached category five strength before making landfall just south of Belize City on October 31. Residents of Belize City reported very strong winds and storm tides of ten to eleven feet and in some areas as high as fourteen feet. The winds near the center of the storm were estimated at 150 miles per hour. The devastation in Belize was so great that the storm prompted the Government to relocate the capital of the country fifty miles inland. Hurricane Hattie is also known as the hurricane with three names.
