Poor law -- I don't think we're helping you very much. I think the lack of answers you received here is indicative of the problem with rules barring profanity without specific examples codified.

I know my workplace has often referred to broadcast regulation and indicated that when language codified therein is used in anger or to intentionally provoke a response that it can be construed as profane.

I will have a Belikin -- put it on klcman's tab.

It was a word not a gesture.

Okay, let's try some examples. I know the seven words on the "list" and there's not much question those are still pretty much considered profanity by everyone.

But what about terms like:
screwed
butt
ass
hosed
darn
Jesus or Jesus Christ

I guess it would depend on the context in which they were used. Even Wikipedia says profanity is sometimes acceptable.. so does that mean if it is acceptable it is no longer profane? HMMMM...

"A profanity (or swear words, or curse word, or dirty word, or foul language) under current colloquial use is a word, expression, gesture, or other usage which is generally considered insulting, rude or vulgar. The extent to which a profanity is considered to be in some way disagreeable or objectionable depends on context, timing and various other factors. However, the use of certain profanities at certain times, especially in a public setting or during a solemn occasion, may always be considered inappropriate or in bad taste, if not outright abusive, obscene or offensive. At other times the use of certain profanities will be considered mild or acceptable, and may take less recognizable forms, such as a minced oath."

The first thing I would ask, is that you reveal the word. It's hard for people to express an opinion on a word that they can't see.

In general with the words given above, personally, I don't find any of them harmful or evidence of "cursing".

Where the problems lie is with the intended use of the word and how you use it.

It would be extremely hwelpful to know the exact word.

there's plenty of case history and legal writings dealing with profanity. i might investigate cultural references if it is relevant. i wouldn't assume that anything is considered profanity by pretty much everyone.

gotta love "freedom" of speech.

Denny, I don't want your opinion on whether the specific word is profanity - I want to know how you define profanity in general. I already have an opinion as to the specific word.

Law, I don't find your above list of words particularly profane, but I could definitely arrange a few of them together to get the same effect. My criteria would definitely involve attitude much more than what is said. I agree with Denny, we need some more hwelp.

dog - could you please come and sit in for the judge? I think you'd look very handsome in that long black robe.

With the exception of 'darn', you could put those words together to make an extremely profane statement.
