I got mugged back in july when I was walking down the beach alone at night.....but that's just plain stupid on my part and i'll fully admit it. San Pedro is fairly safe but like everyone else has stated, if your daughter and her friend use common sence and responsibility they should be okay, however would u let them roam around on their own back home, let alone in an unfamaliar country....probably not.

maria, i apologize in advance if my words are too strong, but here goes. the fact that you broach this subject on a message board suggests to me that you've already made your decision and you are looking for approval from others to justify what you've decided. keep a close eye on the children.

Steph, where on the beach were you when you got mugged? And what time was it?

You need to be 17 years old to drive a vehicle in Belize, by law. Otherwise they will be totally safe as long as you keep them out of the popular night spots, I would say past midnight. Reggae & rum can be a bit too much to handle for a 16 year old. Besides the drinking age is 18. But besides that, they should have a serious blast with the cave tubing, zip lining, snorkeling, maya sites, etc...

please revisit Pedro2's post--who's opinion I always value--he said that if you don't trust their judgement don't let them go out alone--so most posts here are in agreement.SIN 's last line is good advice also--let them enjoy the other things AC has to offer
But more than that---I am sure that Marty would agree, these threads are what the board is designed for, good information on an important topic

It's kinda cool to see parents with their teenagers out at Fido's, Tackel Box and Wet Willie's enjoying the music together. Great safe fun for all involved.

Hopefully they will be knocked out from all the daytime activities that it won't be a major issue for you.

You will all love it here! Enjoy!

seashell it was that spot on the beach by the cemetary, where there's that little step up to continue on towards wet willies...it was late....probably around 3am....

I hope you weren't hurt!!

Oddly enough, the last time I went by that spot alone late at night, I was thinking to myself . . "self, this could be a bad spot". It was the first time I'd ever been concerned in that area.

I don't suppose there's any chance that the police caught the mugger(s)?

I'm glad it wasn't anything worse and I hope he didn't get away with too much money. I'm thinking at that time of the morning, you probably didn't have a lot left. wink It is more likely the loss of the purse and any sundries that hurt.

That was something I was also doing this time. When I saw a bike coming towards me, or noticed one coming up behind, I'd swing my arm in so that my purse wasn't grabable. And another reason why I never carry more cash than I needed that night.

But these things can happen anywhere. My friend was in Brazil, in a crowd of people, in broad daylight. She had her camera on her wrist and someone grabbed it. She said she didn't fight it at all, her concern was getting her wrist out of the strap before she got hurt.
