Use the search feature to get it from the experts but I intend to try it out on our next trip. I did check out the road, buses and cost while in cancun last time. 22 US from cancun to chetumal by bus. Roads were real good buses were nice. Not sure on cost with bus change from chetumal to corozal or if there would be enough time to catch the last flight over to A/C. So a motel in Corozal might have to be added in there. Flights to Cancun will have to be much cheaper to cover these expenses but only one way to find out. Good luck and let us know.

We did the small flight to Corazol, taxi to Chetumal Bus to Cancun 4 years ago. Make sure you get the EXPRESS bus and take a sweater on it! You get 2 movies... one in english and one in spanish. But it's a nice trip.
I'm ON MY WAY! 2 hours till i leave for the Airport!!! WOO HOO..........

We traveled that way Aug last year, US20 each and 5 hours on the bus.
Had to overnight Chetumal as we arrived at 11.00pm.

Hotel Maya (Corozal) works with San Juan and Linea Dorado, they take you across the boarder and no need for a transfer service. You pay them for the ride straight through to Cancun or Playa (with automatic transfers to the luxury bus in Chet).
Easiest way. Belize City's agents are at the Marine Terminal and Amigos by the bridge in Santa Elena, Cayo.

I would think at certain times of the year especially you could pick up some R.T. cheap tickets to Cancun. The savings would make the expense by bus from Cancun to Xcalak pale in comparison to the expense of the R.T. plane ticket to Belize.
I would like to hear from more people who made this trip. Please tell us of your experiences in saving money this way. Those who are going to Palm Bay club only at the northern end of Ambergris would really be saving money I would think by flying into Cancun instead of going by way of Belize.

My wife and I have done the trip several times. It's an option if you have a spirit of adventure and are willing to add an extra day to your trip. The five hour bus ride is long, but if you are one who can sleep on a bus, it's not bad. It is chilly though, I don't know why they keep the busses so cool. The airport is south of Cancun so it is faster to take a shuttle to Playa Del Carmen and take the ADO bus from there to Chetumal.

You need to study a map of Quintana Roo. Xcalac is way off the bus route...bus goes to Chetumal.

Do we then take a boat or taxi from Chetumal to Xcalac or what are the options then?

Why do you want to go to Xcalac? What is your destination?

So maybe you can find an Xcalak forum for your questions?
edit: a simple search turned this up...
Can you get there by bus or cab? You can get there by bus although it can be complicated. When you get to Cancun, you'll have to head downtown to the bus station by either cab or shuttle. When you get there, catch one of the ADO buses to Felipe Carrillo Puerto. Disembark there and catch one of the regular buses to Limones. Disembark and catch the bus to Xcalak.
The above scenario is really an over-simplification of what's involved. The arrival of your airplane has a bearing and so does when you get to Limones. If you don't arrive in Limones by mid-afternoon, you'll miss the Chetumal to Xcalak bus that stops there.
I've heard that you could hire a cab in downtown Cancun for about U.S.$125.00 to take you to Xcalak - I've never done it. A cab might also be substituted for a bus on one of the other legs of the trip. Bus to either Felipe Carrillo Puerto or Limones and hire a cab from there.
Buses leave Xcalak every day at 5:00AM and 2:00PM. They stop in Limones and then head south to Chetumal. If you are heading north, you'd get off in Limones and catch the next one heading north.

From San Pedro we take a boat to Xcalac (or Palm Bay). You probably need to rent a four-wheel drive in Chetumal to get to Xcalac, then hire a boat to get south to Palm Bay.

Does anyone know which time of the year you can grab a cheap RT flight to Cancun from most major cities in the U.S.? Is it during the winter time when many tour operators are competing with each other? What were the cheapest prices you found last winter? Any feedback would be appreciated.

i have heard that there is a boat shuttle from xcalac to san pedro. is this currently true? especially after hurricane dean? transportation has been easy to xcalac, by bus or car. the roads were good before dean. any update on this would be appreciated. i live in playa del carmen, so info about flying from playa would also be helpful. thanks.
