On the Seaside Guest House, when I updated the UpClose Central America guidebook for Random House this summer, I included the latest information on the Seaside Guest House, based on a talk with the manager, John Self. Here's what I said:

Seaside Guest House. This is, hands down, the most popular value spot in Belize City. The house is a good-looking, two-story quasi-colonial, run by The Friends Quaker group. Rooms are US$16.50 (single), US$24 (double). A space in the seven-bed dorm is US$10. It's usually full, so call before arriving. This hotel is for sale---for US$145,000. The Friends are looking for a new place in Cayo, so be on the alert for changes. 3 Prince St., at Regent St., tel. 027/8339, e-mail friends@btl.net. From Swing Bridge, walk south 5 blocks on Regent St. and turn left. 7 dorm beds and 9 rooms with shared bath. Cash only.

I'd add that while it is certainly a popular budget place, and a good place to meet other travelers, moi I'd rather spend about twice what I'd pay for a share-bath double at Seaside and get a beautiful private room with private bath and A/C in a lovely old home in a safe place with gracious hosts -- I'm talking about Colton House, which is right across from the Radisson and next door to the Great House.

Please, someone! I am looking for the travel logs - silkpainter directed me to at www.bze.net, but I get Natural Light Productions, don't think that's what I want.
I have found travel logs somewhere before, but can't remember where. I'm thinking of bringing a car from the US by the end of the year (Faint of Heart - I'm not), just trying to get the details. What are the fuel prices at now, Gas? Diesel? Thanks for the info. on Seaside Guesthouse -(Lan) Is $145,000US a firm price?

Not sure exactly where the travel logs are on belize.net, but we have a couple on the Web edition of Belize First at http://www.turq.com/belizefirst -- look under sample articles. We also have 150 or so reader trip reports and hotel reviews organized by area in Belize -- look under hotel reviews or something like that.

Gas in Belize now is pricey -- around US$2.85 a gallon for unleaded, US$2.50 for regular, US$2.15 for diesel.

On the Seaside price, nothing is firm in Belize. I know they were hoping to get an offer but don't know if it came through or not.

I took the advice of someone on here and used Mars Travel out of Houston. $435 from Boston to Belize in February. I was very happy with them.

I find it a little more controversial and not regulated very well.

I drove thru Mexico when I moved here....it was not a good experience...but some people love it.

If your doing it just to sell the car when you get here....a word of advise....the used car market is saturated here and you won't get what you think it's worth. Not to mention the outrageous duty you have to pay when you sell it.
