Where will you be staying? In town and for much of the south there's bad light pollution all night. As Otter says you really need to go north to get away from the street lights.

I'd also be interested in seeing what you do. I have a passing interest in astronomy.

This sounds like a perfect night-tour for an enterprising individual... You moving to the island Astrodude?

The one challenge you will have regardless of where you stay is the fact that you are at sea level, and right next to the ocean on top of that. Lots of moisture in the air, which does cloud things up a bit. I took my 7x35 field glasses with me last month and the viewing was good, but not like a cold northern night with all the water frozen out of the air... Was kind of cool to see everything shifted 'north' - its weird to see Polaris so close to the northern horizon. Previous posts are right though, the further north you are the less sky glow.

When we were there lat year, we stayed North of the cut and walked home from town a few nights. The stars were amazing!

might want to bring extra batteries also -if no electric than no charging up! Night Sky is awesome, I have seen a moonbow from San Pedro! you could hire a guide to take you up north away from the town if you want less man made light, or just out into the water if your equiptment could handle it. Actually a few nice spots at the end of docks don't have lights. Don't bring anything you can't replace IMO. Sand, water, heat, salt (even in the air) all take their toll on everything. Also if you have any cheap giveaway telescopes or books it is fun to leave things behind with new friends. We always brought extra hooks, line, hair things for girls, rubber bugs, t-shirts, hats, sunglasses, etc.
The trouble for me is finding something awesome in the San Pedro Sky at night and then thinking I will see it here - then all I see at night is clouds! They did clear for the lunar eclipse though! Belize it!

My wife and I are staying at the Belizian Shores (about 3.5 miles north of San P). I would be happy to show anyone stars, although it may not be what you are expecting......

To see things like in the magazines you must take long exposure images (like 2 to 4 hours) but if you want to see some of the stuff I have done just click the link in my signature line to get to my site then click the 'Images' link on the left side.

Still the stories and facts about the stars are so very interesting (okay that sounded a little geeky).

Not anytime in the near future, but you never know..... My wife and I are test driving different areas to see where we want to retire (in about ten years). This trip is a test run to see if we need to add Belize to our possible retirement locations....

I am thinking on bringing my 20mm X 100mm binos and my solar binos. No way I would bring my imaging telescope (Takahashi FSQ-106n if anyone knows what that is).

I am more interested in the no light pollution more than anything.

My wife and I will be there mid April to The end of April. If you happen to run into a short (5 foot 8 inch) not so fat, bald guy just ask if he is Astrodude. If it is him then I am sure he will show the night sky provided the clouds cooperate laugh
