Alright, bananas are technically an annual herb. They must be planted every year. The 'trunk' of the tree is tightly wrapped leaves and the bananas themselves are a part of the flower.

My experience is that bananas are constantly putting up new shoots and we are supposed to encourage the strongest down hill one. Once the stalk has produced one hand it will not produce another and should be cut down unless you just want it for decoration.
The flower is awesome and seems to last forever. Some of my favorite photos are of banana flowers. I wish I could find a way to paint a wall to match that.
