I've been checking fares from Calif to BZE...and thought we might try TACA this time. My big question is: most of the flights only seem to allow a 50 min "layover" in San Salvador...is this time enough to disembark, get to new gate, get onboard next flight? We're planning on just "carryon" bags---will we have to go through security??
Help?! I need to get our flights bought..before the prices go any higher (gas costs)!!! Thanks!!N

Hey, Cheshire....we're in Palm Springs. Fares are outrageous from California to Belize right now. We're going through Cancun (on our "sayonara tour") and we'll end up leaving out of Miami to Cancun for $169 one-way.

Here's a couple of other options, price-wise:

1. Spirit Air from L.A. to Ft Lauderdale then down to Cancun. Long trip, but great prices.
2. Express Jet from Ontario(CA) to Austin. Vivaaerobus from Austin To Cancun. (about $200-300!!! pp)
3. Alaska Airlines - L.A. to Cancun non-stop (but pricey).

When are you heading down?

I've made 13 or 14 trips and flown TACA on all but one. They are great! El Salvador is no problem, you will have to go through security but it is easy and generally painless. The airport in El Salvador is also a great place to pick up coffee. Usually TACA has about the best rates available from Calif.

what do you do once you get to Cancun? Boston to Belize is getting very high also.

Take the ADO bus from Cancun aiport to Playa del Carmen. Spend the night (if you want). Take the ADO bus from Playa to Chetumal 4 1/2 hours for around $20-30 usd, I think.

Use Belize Transfers to pick you up in Chetumal, cross the border to Corozal, then Tropic Air to San Pedro.

Sounds hectic, but it's really not bad. Saves a ton of money. Use the search above and you'll see plenty of posts re: ADO & Cancun.

Good luck,
Amy

Flip-Flop, I am in Palm Springs as well. Your "sayonara tour?" Thanks for the price suggestions as I am going back in October.
