Certainly better in San Pedro than in many parts of Central America. Unfortunately they do sometimes still happen. Hopefully the BDF presence will lessen the crime that is on the island.

Probably will as long as uniformed guys carrying M16 are walking around. If I were a criminal I would probably would not partake in criminal activities - until they left.

Is it true that they will be here for a year? I think that will cut down on crime significantly.

Don't get me wrong. I am not against them being here. Unfortunatly because of the increase in crime, they are needed. It is sad that we need uniformed M16 carrying people on an island that should be far more free of crime. It is not the image of AC that I would prefer to see. And, it is not a long term solution. So I would hope efforts will also continue to find long term solutions that do not have to project such an image. I much prefer the image of the Belikin Calander Girls as a Rambo BDF guy on the beach.

Very interesting presence here. They all wear camouflage and do blend in. As I drove around town today I spotted a couple of teams. In each case they were standing quietly in the shade of a tree with their guns over their shoulders. They were not at all menacing.
I like to wave and give them a thumbs up - I get a smile in return. I think it is important that we let them know we appreciate their being here.
I had lunch at El Fugon where a lot of locals go. One lady told me that if the BDF would just stand out on the corner down the street the crack house a block away would fold up.

They should outfit the lads in Hawaiian shirts...to take the edge off the machine guns. PS. Great photo op for the tourist!!!

During the Town Meeting regarding crime...3 bank robberies, 8 assaults, 2 rapes, and 4 arsons occurred. The meeting however was reported very informative with many great ideas shared by the participants.

Arm the Belikin Calander Girls.

And let me see if I have this right. The BDF "blends in" with their camouflage- must wear the newest Mossy Oak island pattern - while standing under trees and smiling while the locals know where a crack house is. frown

I really do think armed Beliken Girls - in camouflage bikinis of course - would be equally effective.

Also, Scubaldy: I know you said you were able to spot a couple of the teams, but keep in mind not everyones eyes are trained like yours.

Guatemala City crime is considered greater than in San Pedro.
