I'm not directly involved anymore, I just volunteer when asked. Your best bet is saga@btl.net.

I saw a show on tv the other night. I can't remember what channel but it had a couple that were raising a monkey as their own child!! No kidding. It was awful. The had removed her teeth and I think her claws too. She is about 22 yrs old. Their human children even referred to the monkey as their sister.

Wild!

Oh, I saw Laura last night, she is in great spirits despite the fact that she is all bandaged up and taking a series of rabies shots - ouch.

Belize-N-Us, to answer your question:
I guess that when they would have had a net, they would have used it!
Now my question to you:
Why weren't you there, to coordinate a well thought-out capture?

Thanks! Glad to hear she is doing OK. I saw the ad but could not watch that show--sick--and these people think they are being good to animals--NOT.

I'm pretty sure this monkey belonged to Spanish, who had it (and another one) in a large cage at his place. He called it Pancho, and it only understood commands in Spanish, no English. As I mentioned on another thread, he is not looking well, and I would imagine that is why the monkey was out roaming around.

Pancho used to belong to Miquel (Beans) and when he sold or rented the property where Mermaid(?)Pizza is near Belize Bank, Spanish (Jose Garcia) took Pancho to San Telmo. He (Pancho)was of quite an age and probably getting irritable and crotchety in his old age as well as not being cared for.
Spanish is really not well, as you mentioned.
Perhaps Saga should look into the well being of the other monkey?

Shorty, if I had been there you can bet I would have found a net and caught the monkey WITHOUT KILLING IT. If you saw the photos of the attempted capture you would have seen a guy feeding and petting the monkey at one point. If you can pet it then you sure could net it. Wacking it's brains out would not have been anywhere on my list of ways to resolve the issue.

I certainly feel bad for the lady that is having to take rabies shots, that REALLY stinks. But it is not the monkey's fault that it was brought illegally to the island. It's not the monkey's fault that it was unleashed on the public. And even though it attacked two innocent people, it didn't deserve to have it's brains bashed in simply because it's captures were too lazy to go find a net.
