You will then require the fishing license with a peeping tom clause written into it!

There is also talk of license to dive.

And the latest rumor is there will be a license required to rob or steal. Only tourist who plan to rob or steal will be required to purchase a license as Belizeans will be exempt just as they are for the fishing license.

from the Chamber of Commerce minutes of Jan 22....

A discussion was held on the new law passed requiring fishing licenses. The major complaints were that the law was passed without any public notification or input, and the other problem has been no knowledge of what the actual fees are going to be. Another government fee and another burden to tourism is typical of past actions. Hopefully they will at least make the fee reasonable and the license easily attainable. No tourist wants to arrive to go fishing in the morning only to find out he has to get a license first.

In retrospect I guess I don't object to a license. I use guides about 15 days a year in SP. Another $150US won't kill it. But the perception(mine) is what I object to, that's it's just another nickle and dime tax/fee. If it's a fishery resource protection issue, include everyone that fishes. If it's a marine environment issue then license the divers and the snorklers. I need a license at home,in every other state I've fished in, and in MX. A term license(monthly, annual) makes more sense, and it certainly needs to available in advance. If I get into SP at 2pm, get into a room by 3 with cocktails at 3:05, I really don't want to chase around for the license I'll need at 6am the next morning. I do think fishing with a licensed tour guide should be exempted. Those guys already pay their share.

Your first sentence says you don't mind, but the rest of it says you do, so no idea where you stand.

If the CofC quote holds true, this may end up as a sometimes enforced, poorly advertised trap for tourists, and the major source of income will be fines, not license fees. Where would be the most likely place this would be obtainable in San Pedro? I want to purchase one right away just to try it out.

I hope that someday we can put aside our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

takes 50 dollars for gas to come to town. like the boat lic. captain lic the expense is getting it not the lic fee itself.

I can only speak for my little contribution to the AC economy but my wife and I visit at least twice a year and always book a fishing charter. I doubt this will be the case on our upcoming March trip. I would also guess others will do the same.
So who losses out? The indivdual boat captains just trying to make a living. Will these increased fees help them? I doubt it.
There's just too much nickle and diming going on. It's not totally about the cost it's more about the hassles and the principles.

The Belize National Culinary Specialty has been changed by the Government of Belize in "Goose that Lays Golden Eggs".
Enjoy!
