Whenever there is miss information or no information, there will always be those who will look at worst case scenarios:

I get in late...... I want to fish for 3 days and then leave... will they be open at 5am.....how will I get a license......why should I bother coming now.......I'll go somewhere else......I'll never set foot in Belize again*.

Having all the components in place before announcing any program makes sense and then it can be fairly evaluated.

Phil this is not about money ,if you think fisherman who fish here all the time ,are upset about the money you are sooooooooooooo wrong..it is not going to help with the fish stock or anything ,even close to that if it was I would not say a thing..it is the big issue,here ..and shuffles is got it RIGHT .PHIL this is not about money .I say prove me wrong, show me next year where the money went It will never happen ...the money will be sucked up by the greedy ..Ask the local guides what they think I have,AND THEY ALL say the same thing i am saying.... I am just a once a month gringo and will fish here as i call this place my second home .but this will hurt the island for sure..

Gentlemen! Gentlemen! Why are you picking on poor little Belize? Have you never done business in the states? If I am building a 40 story building in Jersey, I have to pay the elevator opperator to get my building supplies to the floor Im working on in a timely manner. If I'm in Chicago i'm paying someone not to knock over my business. If you want the federalies in ajacent countries not to hassle you, you give them cigs. I am surprised that you are getting huff over something you all have known exists in Belize - corruption, the same word used world wide. I say secede, become a new country. Viva le revolution!

Let me try to put it in this perspective as someone who loves to come down and do some drinking and throw in a little fishing too.
I have fished with Felipe Ancona (Alexis) for 11 different trips and before that Fred and prior to that Manuel and we love each and every trip we go out on the water. We have a standing ageement with Felipe that we do not wish to keep the fish to eat and already have on one the wall that cost my dad a fortune to bring back to the States but if Felipe knows of a family or charity that is in need then give the fish to them. With that agreement we then tip him at the end of the week and everyone is happy but if he sells the fish to the local restaurants then no tip as that is double dipping and Felipe is a man of his word so I trust him. He may give the fish to Celi if she need some for the restaurant but I can assure you we have thrown back some fair sized fish in our day.

Now here is my point, I pay for beer, bait, gas, boat, lunch (if we do it with newbies) and yet we walk away with pictures and memories and you now want me to charge me that right to fish in the ocean with Felipe and not have any rules or limitations? Come on, it isn't getting any cheaper to come down to Belize nor is it to go out on a boat so I advise caution and do some serious thinking...

I emailed the link to this thread to a friend who owns a fly shop and is a regional editor of Flyfisherman Magazine. I think it's time to spread the news via the web, see if feedback from the corners of the world whence come the people who spend $5000 a week here has any impact on this decision. It's ludicrous, but may stand if no one shines the light of day on it. This little forum won't have any impact on it's own, so if you know someone, or know someone who knows someone, pass the word.

Hey !!! STOP YOUR CRYING. I have it on goood authority that the $20/day fee includes all the Belikins you can drink, a shore lobster lunch, bait and tackle and 3 cuban cigars.

Skippy: My guess is that the flyfishing "community" in the States will buy into this just like they did the catch and release on tarpon, bonefish and permit. The latter was heralded as an achievement no less significant that the creation of marine reserves, and sold by the outfitters as just another example of how environmentally conscious and progressive Belize is. There's been a post about the new license on a west coast BB for a week with few views and no comment.

The money goes to fund some strange phenomina of people drinking large quantities of Jager and eating large quantities of pizza on the island. Hmmm...???

JUST IN: The new fishing lices is $US10 per each hook used during the day.



I am really suprised people are still coming back to Belize (and ever cooler new people are experiencing it for the first time, thank God for that). I used to pay $1BZ for a Belikin not too long ago. I guess people can pay a little more for somethings that they really like.

Yes I remember Belikin for a buck too. Thats the real meaning of status quo, (change)
