I was a bartender for 12 years and part of that time was in Denver. I worked at the El Dorado on S. Colorado Blvd. One day I had a particularly nasty fellow come in that was not one of my regulars. I put up with him for a while then asked him what his name was. He was taken aback at that but answered me with something like Darren Brown.

I put a puzzled look on my face like I was thinking very hard then said.

"Oh Yes!! I just remembered, your mother called here yesterday".

Darren said "My Mother?"

Me, "Yes, she said to tell you she finally found out who your father was". All very sweetly.

He was not amused but the 6 guys sitting at the bar were. He left after standing up like he was going to reach across the bar and all six guys gathered around him and told him that would not be a very good idea.

A very early lesson in the power of words came for me one summer back in the late 50's in England.

We were out for a Sunday drive (anyone remember those?) and as we started across an old stone single lane bridge, another car approached from the opposite direction.

The other driver pulled right up to our car and yelled through the window "You'll have to move, I never give way to fools"

My father was 6'3", a big man in England in those times and as Rugby player most of his life was not one to be intimidated easily, but when he replied "Oh really? I make a point of doing so" and backed up leaving the other guy fuming in the middle of the bridge, a greater lesson was taught to both the other driver and the kids in the car!

No doubt he was not amused as we all waved at him when he passed us by!

In the mid '70s I had a motor home which we took to Colorado each summer for 6-8-weeks. Late in the afternoon we were traveling a one lane road up the side of a mountain, almost to our destintion. We met an old man coming down the same road and stopped just in front of us and informed me I would have to back up to the next wide spot and let him by. I replied that I wasnt interested in backing that 40' MH at least 4 miles down the mountain. He just sat there for 15-20 min and again told me to back up. I said nope, you back up. He told me he wasnt moving. Finally I said to him, we have food, water and booze for 10 days, how are you fixed? He backed up.

Pug and E, both great stories.

I pulled into get gass one time on my Harley. Another guy was pulling in facing me as I got ready to leave. He thought I should back the bike up 20+ upgrade feet for him. Didn't happen. LOL

Someone I knew bought a Messerschmidt bubble car whenever it was that they were fashionable. One with just a front-hinging door. They didn't have a reverse gear. He drove it into his garage drive, down quite a steep slope, till it was butting up against his garage door, and of course couldn't get out. He was there for hours before neighbours came round to see what all the noise was about. He sold it soon afterwards.

I've often wondered what happened to them. There were quite a lot of them in Britain in the '60's but I haven't seen one in decades. Maybe they just rusted away as most cars did back then. Most modern BMW owners don't realise that the marque had such humble origins!

Peter, they brought them all over here. There is quite a club for them here. There was even a TV show that had one on it. Can't remember the name of the show but the "star" was named Steve Erkel.

I happen to really like Beyonce' new song "single ladies".
But this is just SO wrong on many levels. Now I cannot get the vision out of my head when I hear the song. So, of course, I had to share......
