The purse is more like a wallet. It has a strap that can cross over my body, or wrap around my wrist. Fortunately, I wasn't carrying it either way, or I'd likely have been hurt. The guy hit the wallet so fast, that he had it and was gone before I'd even registered what had happened. I was also quite thankful that I'd decided not to carry my camera that night. This little wallet purse, has a pocket that my camera fits in perfectly.

The reason that I say he didn't get much, was because I generally keep all my money in my pockets. Yes, since it was my first night on the island, I found that it was quite a simple matter to go without a purse at all.

I haven't reported this on the board before, because well . . you know how it goes. But since someone else was reporting these things I figured I might as well.

What really got to me was that it was early in the evening and right next to a bunch of tourists sitting out on a deck . . not to mention that the bas**** smiled at me, just before he hit the wallet. Of course, I'd smiled back . . but as he ran away I yelled after him . . . "All my money is in my pocket A**hole!".

Later my friends pointed out that yelling out where I actually keep the cash was not so smart. I was just so darned mad to think that my purse was going to be thrown away for nothing, except a few local phone numbers and a magnifier I use for reading menus. Damn, damn, damn.

It sickens me that this sort of thing is happening, that it happened that early, that it happened that close to town, that it happened in front of people, that I wasn't smart enough to read the situation before it occurred. So much for thinking I'm island savvy. frown

Thanks Jane. Yeah, I'm sad and it changed how I feel when I'm there. Also changed are some of my old habits that had always seemed safe.

Back in the day, I used to walk from town down to Crazy Canuk's of an evening and then walk back again at the end of the evening. Heck, I used to walk from there all the way to my place in Boca del Rio at all hours of the morning, with nary a concern. That changed a couple of years ago.

To now feel concern on an early evening jaunt on the beach *in* town . . well . . you know . . sigh.

Very creepy that he smiled at you... thanks for sharing your story as it makes others more aware!

Sorry to read about your ordeal. It's not good. Maybe a few high quality video camera's placed in the right locations would help catch such people. Just a thought.

High quality video camera's have worked !! In St.John they had a crime problem that was resolved by placing cameras around the island. They had some very well off residents chip in , mounted them around the island.I am told ,that was the best thing they have ever done.Maybe we will do the same!we have discussed this with the Minister and Mayoress and SGT. Arnold with concerned group. The cost was around $20,000 us dollars.
d2 good thinking, need the funds.
