I do see both sides.

I did see both local police and BDF during the day.

The question was.....why didn't I see them at night? Why didn't I see them heavily protolling in town on a busy Sat. night?

NOT being critical of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a simple / reasonable question that if I lived there full time I would ask in person to the folks in charge.

Right now if I asked them they would blow me off as just a gringo tourist (which I guess is really mostly what I am for now).

I understood your question perfectly. There is a lack of police and BDF from the hours of 6:00 pm to 1:00 am. After 11:00 pm you can find many outside bars on Front Street. After 1:00 and until 3:30 or 4:00 you will see many of them outside Big Daddy's or Jaguar's. Supposedly to keep bar fights down. I suspect another reason is to pick up women, but then again, see above.

And don't get me started about traffic cops.......

My observation is that when the officers ever do leave the station (which seems to be a social scene a lot of the time complete with girls) they all go out together and ride around as a group, which limits their ability to be in more places. Not sure why they do this...

really mostly what you are for now? You are either a tourist or you aren't. No matter how many nights you have dreams that you live there and no matter how many trips per year you take.
