Pam, the San Pedro Social Club has been desolved due to internal fighting and bickering. It started as a group of concerned people from SP, Canada,US and other countries that had an interest in the wellfare of the kids of SP. I formed it as a tax exempt, non profit org at my expence, not ever thinking it would become clickish. It did and I gave it up, just didnt need the crap. And ya know what? I still get it. End of story.

My favorite Cause here on Ambergris Caye is SAGA because it helps those that can't help themselves. The way you treat your animals as a society is a direct reflection on how you treat each other as human beings.

Animals on the island are simply disposable when they are not cute anymore nobody cares about them and too many people (Parents) are not responsible enough to make the decisions needed to keep them healthy and happy.

SAGA has a great track record and has been doing this work for many years. They are also responsible for the fact that there is a Vet on the island.

If you love animals then this is the cause you need to contribute and assist.

If Children is your thing then there are several schools and the library that can always use help both financially and physically.

What I wanted to say in my earlier post was that whatever cause you decide to throw yourself on do it with the passion and focus. Trying to do too much will basically accomplish less.

Also don't just give people money without being sure what those funds will contribute to. Take an interest and don't be afraid to give an opinion but also keep in mind that most of these organizations are run by intelligent people who are doing what they can with what they have and in spite of everything going on around them (culture issues, government and critics).

Good luck on your quest

Smart of you to wonder WHY? I think each of us needs to choose our own battle (cause) and put a lot of energy and money into it. Here on the island each person CAN make a difference. That is one of the reasons I prefer living here to living in California.

However, I think we can participate in a number of causes, sometimes just by our presence.

When I moved across the bridge almost 5 years ago I joined the North Ambergris Caye Neighborhood watch and serve on the board by keeping the e-mail going. We meet once a month.

I also attend the weekly Chamber of Commerce meetings. My initial concern was the lack of trash containers and was happy to be a squeaky wheel in getting the blue cans out. I look to this weekly event as a networking tool. I pay my dues as individual members and usually contribute to whatever we are sponsoring.

As soon as I learned about the Ambergris Caye Concerned Citizens for Sustainable Development I attended a meeting, wrote a check and have tried to spread the word. I am most impressed that this group is headed up by Belizean's and I want to help in any way I can.

WHY? Because everything else that I love about this island, this country, this world depends on us taking care of it. I am a scuba diver, underwater photographer and videographer and since my first dive here in 1998 I have been watching this reef die. The fish are disappearing, the coral is bleaching, and too many vessels have scrapped the reef.

I have video of where a large boat (about 3 or 4 years ago) drug its anchor chain across miles of hard coral. The government dicked around for so long trying to decide on the penalty that the boat left, never to return and never to pay anything for the extensive damage it did.

So, suit up, show up and join in.

My passions are children, animals, and the enviornment. So, while we are not residents of the island (unfortunately), we do support SAGA via donations and have become close with a local family that we have somewhat adopted. They have two young children that we bring/send school supplies, including reading and educational workbooks, to and clothing. When we are down in April (was to have been February but two broken ribs postponed the trip) I will be making a donation to the the Ambergris Caye Concerned Citizens for Sustainable Development. Wish I could do more "on site."
