When we were there in early March I fell in love with a dog that followed us home and we bought her food and she stayed the night and part of the next day before she wandered off. I would have loved to have taken her home with us. What would be the procedure for this? It seems like every year when we are there I fall in love with a dog that adopts us for a short time!!

Is it difficult to bring one back to the US? I know next time we are down there will be a dog that I fall in love with and we would love to help!!

It is simple bringing an animal back to the US.

The top half (up to after purchasing your airfare) apply.

The vet here in Belize will give you an international health certificate and you'll also need to have a copy that the animal has all of its shots. That's it. Easier going to the US with a pet than from the US to Belize (where nightmares can and HAVE happened!)

It will cost whatever the flight is from Belize to your Destination..Unless the dog is the size of a Shih Tzu, then he/she can be classified as a carry on since they can fit under your seat. If that is the case the dog would fly free. I have done this numerous times with dogs. I just recently purchased a Pure Bred Boxer from getting Euthinized and it cost me $300 from Kansas to Seattle.

Incorrect cost when flying with your animal. They do not charge the cost of what your flight is. It sound like you were not on the flight with the animal and flew him/her shipped as actual Cargo.

American Air: $150 US one way set rate.
(up to 100 lbs combined with Kennel. Large Kennel average weight 12 lbs.)

Continental Air: Fee figured based on weight of animal and kennel combined and a rate for distance traveled. To give you an idea for a pet and kennel totaling 90 lbs you're at approximately $450 one way.

US Air: Will not check animals internationally (they will allow small dog/cat at $100 fitting under the seat and count as a carry on to some destinations, check for details.)
