Peter, I tried to pm you but it's full. Here is the big picture you may be able to help me with. I came into possession of a scuba tank and the gear. I believe it may be stolen and would like to find out if possible. If I took good pics or just got the numbers off the tank could the rightfull owner be identified? I'm to transfer the equipment Monday morning to the one who claims ownership. Oh, what to do? The person who I'm to return it to was arrested in L.A on Feb.16,09 on a robbery charge and is out on $50,000. bond. That is Booking No.;1805302

Danny, how the hell did you get in this mess? At least make the guy provide you with SN#'s, but as said before, contact your local police and and give them the info. Maybe you can help with a "sting" operation. Take care and don't get stupid!!!!!!!!!

Lots of stolen stuff gets reported. I had a parachute system stolen. A fellow jumper was at the swap meet and saw my gear for sale for $50 a week later. He found the reserve packing data card and called me. We went to the swap meet with the cops. I got my gear back. They also found a bunch of stolen tools, ID #'s were collected and they found the guy they belonged to also.
So go to the local cops and tell them what's going on.

That's quite a bit of very specific info ya got there, detective Danny. When does he arrive?

Skippy, I'm not a detective and I'm not a cop. Rob who was charged with burglary, is here and does not arrive. I'm house sitting and at first was to allow Rob to pick a Milwaukee dolly truck model 60136 which is brand new and which is here. That at first was all. There is a lot of stuff here. Now he says the scuba stuff is his and the porter cable skill saw, the beeman pelet rilfe with scope and the five pack cordless power kit in the gray aluminum box. The owner says to give him what he says is his but do not let him over. I made tentative plans to meet him someplace to be decided Monday morning with those items. I'm really thinking about gps hidden in one of the items and letting it go at that. No muss, no fuss.

If Rob can not prove the items are his do not let him take them and wait for Peter to tell you what to do.

Also, the reason wanted to know abut the scuba tank numbers is if I could find who bought or filled the tank I could notify that person what I know about their once owned property. Just like some one did for Reaper. I don't want to be a hero just trying to do a random act of kindness.

Are you in Belize?

If so and your guy "Rob" is also here then he is in violation of his bail since if he was arrested and charged in LA and out on bond he should not have left the country.

Regardless, if you are concerned that you may be handling or about to handle stolen goods report this to the local police.

Amanda, no I'm not in Belize. I'm in Pacific Palisades, LA County. I'm not concerned about that. I just wanted to know if I could identify the owner of scuba tank by it's stamped numbers or who has filled that tank. Is there a reporting system in place. Something like vin no. on cars.

Danny - I've been offline for a couple of days, and I didn't realise my PMs were full. As to your problem, there is no central register of tanks and you cannot tell from the number who owns it, even though that number is supposedly unique world-wide. I say "supposedly" purely because there has been a suggestion that the Chinese may have been manufacturing "forged" tanks with numbers duplicated from genuine manufacturers. I hope that suggestion is spurious!

There is a longer-term way of perhaps identifying the true owner of stolen gear. The most widely used discussion forum world-wide for scuba is www.scubaboard.com, and they have a sub-forum for reporting stolen gear. You could post details of the gear there and see if anyone responds.

Embossed into the thick metal on the shoulder just below the neck are many numbers and letters, giving the specification and usage of the tank (though you need special knowledge to interpret this correctly). The information presented is standard across manufacturers but the manner of presenting it isn't. The key information is the manufacturer's name and the number, both of which can be identified by a process of elimination. There are two or three principal manufacturers. The "number" is usually a letter followed by string of numbers (I can't remember how many and don't have a tank with me).

Sorry if this has missed your deadline.

Peter

Update, Rob called me this evening and asked "are we on for tomorrow morning" and I said "sure". I asked where he's at and he said Venice at sapuvala (sp) . I suggested we meet half way someplace like a von's supermarket. He wasn't too responsive to that but said ok. I intend to meet him at the Von's at Sunset and the Pch in the area where the web cam is focused at that location from the Taco Bell Gas station. I'm going to put him off until about 2 pm.

I made arrangement to meet Rob at 12:30 at the Von's at Sunset and the PCH this afternoon which is in 1/2 hour from now. I took good pics of the stuff and got the serial no of the Beeman Pellet rifle with scope. I didn't have time to get a gps and so that's it. If you view the web cam referenced above I be wearing a white panama hat and drive a white Rav4, Rob drives a white van. I'll park on the left side of the cam shot.

Poor production values, very weak on set decoration, almost no character development . . . all in all, a weak debut effort by Danny2.

I was wondering the same thing. Transferring stolen goods is a felony, so it seems rather funny that he wants it broadcast to the world.

You guys are really funny. I didn't ask for this job I'm just here. I got some really good pics of the stuff but I have no evidence that it's not Rob's. We had a good talk and he explained to me that the reason he was arrested on 02/16/09 was that he was out of his mind and walked away from the facility that he was assigned to and was walking threw back yards towards his home and he supposedly was peering thru a window and was jiggling the door handle and it scared the lady in side. He can't remember what happened next but when he woke up in the front yard there were two cops with guns in his face and a helicopter overhead with a big light shining in his face. I told him that's better than waking up with paramedics hovering over you.

As bait I asked him if he wanted to sell the rifle for $100.00 right now. He said no he just bought it for 200.00 to show his daughter how to shoot. In my opinion you don't teach a young girl to shoot using a Beeman Sportsman 1000 series, serial no. 60502296. Rob has a lot of smooth on his tongue in my opinion.

I asked Rob about what happened after his arrest. Did he plead and sentenced. He said yes he got a choice of 30 days in the can or 20 days community service. He chose the community service and was assigned to cal-tran for the clean up work. He did that one day and refused to go again and is going back to court this wed. and is going to ask for the 30 days because they cut that in half to 15 days and because over crowding they reduce that to 10. It ain't bad in there, ya just sit around and play cards.

There is more to this story and it's too much to say now.

Captjeff, I guess the truth is stranger than fiction. There is more to this story but I'm just tired of drama and just want to live the dream.. Unfortunately I did decide to drop off pictures of the scuba equipment at Malibu Divers today just by the odd chance they filled the tank or knows whose equipment it is.

Hey Cappy, this ain't no joke. Just what don't you believe? It's just a mystery that has few clues. Go to la county inmate information and search the booking no. referenced above and that is the guy I transferred the items to on Monday. Maybe Leah-Ann can get his info and the docket from that arrest and then search other states for other arrests especially in Washington State. If I had access to Lexis/ Nexis I could possibly do that or access to ncic data base. I don't have that ability.
