Canukgirl, Don't let them get you down. They depict the island dogs as carefree, fun loving animals. which I imagine some of them are but they are not cared for my their owners and are flea and tick ridden and do suffer and can get poisoned by the ignorant people who won't enforce spaying and neuturing. You are the best in my book. We have 2 dogs, 3 cats and 6 horse and spend a fortune in vet bills but I wouldn't give it up for a minute for the joy they give us. Keep on having a loving heart!!

Oh, and you probably think that dogs are just domesticated/ watered down wolves, right?

What a hostile response.

That's what they do now (roam around and find their own food).

Upset, huh. Well, it does seem to be an emotional issue here. My point is it need not be if seen from the dog's point of view.
Sure, my 9 month old 75lb golden retriever puppy, Sofie, who I miss more than my wife and daughters (just kidding honey!)when I'm in SP, now she's a totally different story. But the dogs we're talking about, or at least that I'm talking about, are free spirits who will do fine on their own. And as Jim Rome is wont to say, I'm out. I regret posting to this thread.

We are talking about a very specific dog.....sorry skippy, maybe start a topic about free spirited beach dogs. And yes it is an emotional topic as i am being accused of stealing a dog! We are totally off topic now....

I just needed to be given a chance to state what happened with Playa and her dognappers. Read back a few posts if you want to see my response.

I too had a similar experience just recently, beach dog, full of ticks, skin disease, skinny etc, decided he wanted to follow me home. So off we went, he had no collar. The next day I took him to the vet, she said he was not cared for. I made an appointment for him for the next week to get him cleaned up. I had him for about a week and loved him as much as he loved me. He wouldnt leave my side. Well I was walking down the road with him and some guy stops and says its his dog. His dad, girlfriend, and him tried to call the dog, again he wouldnt leave my side. The guy picked up the dog and put him in the back of his truck....nothing I could do. Then his girlfriend gave me the finger. I didnt see the dog for about a week, but now he is back on the beach running wild. Why take him back if they are not going to take care of him. I have only heard of sightings and have not actually seen the dog. But he is one of kind and hope he is doing okay. It can be very emotional. I can feel your pain Canucks.

It's their country. Leave them, and their dogs, alone.

Dear Skippy
I apologize if my response was a bit hostile, please understand that it was not personal towards you. I just happen to feel very strongly about this incident and "fair weather" owners.

I have a dog, "Snoopy" who enjoys roaming around freely and has a great island life. He also wears a collar (that used to have my phone number on it), a bed to sleep in at night, food to eat, medical care when he needs it and lots of love (from many).

My point is that dogs (even pot-lickers) are domestic animals and have few means to survive without human intervention. Some dogs (who are especially cute and smart) have more options than others. I happen to think they should be able to exercise these options if they have a better deal somewhere else, but that's just me smile
