I often carry a knife where I live now. Some folders, some fixed blades, none too big though, I never have any problems as I dont conceal these blades.

Does anyone know what the laws are for knives in belize?

For concealed blades and non concealed ones?

Thank you!

Machetes are carried openly everywhere, so I don't see where a knife would be a problem. Machetes are tools used in a wide range of applications and they are also the weapon of choice in Belize.

There is a law on the size of knives, I can't remember exactly what it states, but I believe switchblades are illegal and you cannot carry a knife with a blade over either 4 or 5 inches long.

If I recall correctly, you are a practitioner of the martial arts. Why would you need a knife ?

It may be wise not to carry a knife to a gun fight, JMHO

I would have to agree with you but recently (this year) the Police have been arresting and magistrates have been prosecuting machete carrying people. It seems to balance on intent to go armed or just carrying a tool on your way to work.
We've(people in the North)had a lot of the bicycle to work traffic on the beach carrying machetes and whacking dogs as they run out to bark at them passing.

Just checked with the local police.
any open blade knife is NOT allowed to be carried.
A folding blade knife must not have a blade more than 3" long, but you must be able to show reason for carrying it, ie. work fishing ect. They said that it is the officers choice to arrest or not when finding someone carrying a knife.

Best advice is, if you are coming to A/C to live, leave your knives at home....Rambo's not welcome here..

If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns.

I've never had to use a knife in self defense. That being said, I always carry (as open as possible) so its visible. I mainly carry it for random reasons we all need knives. Secondly for protection. But a visible weapon (I'm told by many police friends of mine) will scare off most random attacks or muggings. Its kind of like an ADT sticker and robberies. You dont even need an alarm system to scare the robbers off.

I believe it is always illegal to carry a machete after dark, unless you can show you have to carry it from work to home.

The other side of the coin is that people dont control or train their dogs, and it is common to see a dog attack or charge a cyclist. I am a Dog owner and would also whack any dog that did this to me.

Phil, Whacking them with a machete, is a little extreme in 99.9% of the cases don't you think? frown
A stick would certainly deliver your message in a not so cruel way. Unless the dog was especially vicious/dangerous and a person was really at risk I don't think I would resort to that.

Ragman, well, Phil didn't say he would use a machette to whack them. But if you were riding your bicycle, one handed because the other was holding a machette as you were on your way to work . . .and a vicious (or what appeared to be vicious) dog or two ran at you and tried to bite your legs, what would *you* whack them with?

Who needs a knife; just have Mommy or Daddy pay for a bodyguard to escort you to where you need to go.

Sheesh, you guys. I'm not recommending that anyone whack a dog with a machette! I'm just saying one shouldn't be overly surprised if such a thing were to happen. There's long been a problem with many dog owners on Ambergris Caye, not taking proper care and control of their animals. And that includes training them or restraining them, to keep them from trying and/or succeeding in biting people riding their bikes (to work).

All I'm saying is, if someone is being attacked by a dog, they are going to defend themselves with whatever they happen to have handy . . and if what they have handy is a machette, then don't be surprised.

Bing . . . a troll by any other name would croon as sweet.

I think Binghole has a problem with mommy and daddy. Not enough love growing up? Let it go already, read the guys other posts, he says he is self-sufficient.

News flash!! AC single-handedly turns fishing/dive town into mega-resort, modern-day, travel destination built on Cancun model.

No, just doesn't have a ring to it.
