Been thinking of you a lot and the Corona Highway since I first heard about this!

Road to Link Ambergris Caye and Mexico!
Chetumal & Belize Agree to Promote Sea and Land Connections

A press release from The Embassy of Mexico informs that on August 15, the Mayor of the municipality of Othon P. Blanco (Chetumal), Mr. Andres Ruiz-Morcillo, and Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture, Hon. Manuel Heredia, signed a Letter of Intent in order to promote the construction of a road between San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, and Xcalak (within the Municipality of Othon P. Blanco), Mexico.

The objective of the Letter of Intent is to boost the tourism industry in the Chetumal Bay and the north of Belize, including Ambergris Caye. In particular, Mexico and Belize will seek to connect San Pedro with Xcalak (Mexico) and Mahahual with a road, from where an already existing access will make possible the connection with Chetumal or Tulum and Cancun.

The document was signed before the undersecretary of Tourism of the state of Quintana Roo, Mr. Armando Alvarez-Gonzalez, the director of the Port Authority of Quintana Roo, Mr. Javier Zetina-Gonzalez and the Ambassador of Mexico, H.E. Luis Manuel Lopez-Moreno.

Likewise, the Mayor of Othon P. Planco announced the project of a water taxi, which will link Chetumal and Xcalak with Belize. The future water taxi would depart from the "Muelle Fiscal" -the Customs Dock Facility in Chetumal- with a stop at Sarteneja and San Pedro and arrival at Xcalak. The run will be operated by the Belizean company San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi. This service will allow visitors from Chetumal to travel to San Pedro and Xcalak and from there to visit Mahahual and Chinchorro (Mexico). It will also allow Belizeans to travel easily from San Pedro to Chetumal. The new water taxi will benefit the local population on both sides of the border, it will boost the tourism industry and it will promote the economic development of the border area of Mexico and Belize.

In Chetumal, Mexican officials boarded the boat for the familiarization trip, which showed the route of the upcoming water taxi service. They travelled to Sarteneja, where Hon. Heredia hosted them and the signing of the Letter of Intent took place.

Might not help tourism, but will certainly help the flow of drugs.

I've refrained from commenting about the "Road" because it is such a ridiculous idea that I can't believe any thinking person could support it and I say to myself that it will never happen.

OK, they drive down and cross the "new" bridge into San Pedro. Now what? For crying out loud a single truck bigger than a pick up causes a traffic jam now. The streets can not be made wider without bull dosing the town away. Where do the vehicles park? This is all just beyond my imagination. It is almost like the whole thing was cooked up by some one who had never been in San Pedro and had no idea what it was like. OK I've got that off my chest.

Well maybe not all the way off my chest. Say a very modest 100 cars are in SP that came down from Mexico in a day. I would guess that many in SP would also now want a car on the Island so they could visit up North. That number is another guess but how about 200 cars cruising SP at any given moment in the day time, ya right.

The road coming down I would assume would be 40' minimum width. That is going to be a fete in and of it self. Just so absurd.

That's it. Time for an adult beverage.

Seems like a MX subsidized air-trans system would be more effective. MX can pay Tropic and Maya to add Chetumal etc to the towns served...

Get the access, yet avoid the major impact???

Marty, do you have any new and updated news on this since your last post on September 6th, 2009?

I was thinking that anyone with select pieces of property in the far north of Ambergris Caye such as in Palm Bay Club will benefit from this road coming down from Mexico.

Anyone else have any news about the road and a timetable of when they speculate the road may be built?

How do you think they will build the road without affecting the property at Palm Bay Club?

Thank you
