Just talked to Verizon, and the rate is $2.85 per minute for voice, because that is the rate the agreed to with BTL. I had heard of special rates, but after talking to them twice all they offered is $2.85.

Yep. That's what I get. Texting's fairly cheap...unless you're my teenage daughter. Then you don't get to turn your phone on in Belize.

True, our teenage daughter is not even allowed to take her cell phone to the airport to make damn sure she doesn't run up our bill.

Texts are fairly cheap. If you do not travel outside the US much, simply have Verizon turn on roaming - no monthly fees. Only billed as used. $0.50US outbound, $0.05US inbound.

One other thing about Verizon. The newest Droid phones won't work in Belize or anywhere outside the US. I'm still going to get the DroidX and just go without a cell phone during my 12 days in paradise. In 5 trips over the last 4 years the only time I needed my cellphone was during a late May trip when a tropical storm rolled through on my last day. I know enough people now that I'll have an emergency phone close by if needed.

I've been informed that I was wrong about the Verizon Droids. I was referring to the Droid X and Droid Incredible on Verizon. If anyone has any other information I'd appreciate it. I leave for the island mid January.

All in all, your "Verizon" experience will be poor on AC. Serviceable, but poor.Better in SP, butworse north of the cut.

Another suggestion....ask Verizon to send you a 4 Band GSM phone..The local system is GSM....you pay postage both ways about $15. They will assign you a local number. This is only good for about 3 weeks. Don't know what the cost per minute would be...ask them

GRAFFICE is correct. The International Calling Plan from Verizon is NOT free. I too pay $4.00 a month and .35 per minute. I call Belize a lot and am down there about every 6 months now, so this is ideal.
While in Belize, it's .50 to send a text and .10 to receive it.
What IS free is that Verizon will automatically set your phone to International Roaming when you arrive in Belize, this is different then the calling plan. You will pay 2.85 per minute for any calls.
It adds up, too. My first phone bill w/o the calling plan was a shocking.
