Reminds me of the saying that you don't really own anything you can't carry when you're running...

All this hurricane talk has made me realize I need to start prepping my supplies for this year. Hurricane season starts in 2 months! eek.

As I skim threw this thread no one mentioned cash . When a hurricane is on its way , GET CASH , bank lines get really long . It could take half a day or longer in line at a bank , you can use that valuable time for evacuating or boarding up .
"Cash is also King" , Don't take it personal ,people that took credit cards or credit prior may pass and only take cash . We all have friends and families , which will need that cash to evacuate and get food for themselves. Dont forget to stock up on pet food , rotate to keep fresh . Getting alcohol is a must ,if you don't need a little for the nerves , it works great later for trading for food or something you forgot to get or thought was not important at time .

Live on coast in sth.texas...no stranger to hurricans..
I'm not expecting any bears on the island..
grew up hunting with a rifle.
that is the only gun I feel comfortable with
you can keep the bolt open and there is no way anyone can get shot accidentally (including myself)...safety buttons are so tricky!!

anyway..seems to work just as well if not better than a pistol...in my experience..when the intruder hears you close the bolt they usually go away..

When we get electricity..I'll build out of concrete and bury those piers deep...I don't think i'll feel like I need a weapon once we get electricity.

I know what you are saying terrij - just had to fool around a little. The island is lovely and fairly safe if you keep your wits about you - just like most everywhere.

The south is going to build a lot more with power service being expanded from time to time.

See you at a SACNW meeting soon. Amanda

Tim is right about cash, and it is good to be way over prepared. You can go through a lot of goods in a very short period of time during a major emergency.

terrij, we added a new item to our hurricane kit as well. Everyone in our area had signs basically saying "you loot we shoot" etc. One person we saw had two body silhouette's stapled to a piece of plywood labeled his and hers with their scores from the local gun range. They did not have any problems for some reason....

I understand the gun laws of Belize, and know that it may not be nearly as effective to do down there due to the permits requirements etc., but for anyone in the US it was an effective deterrent.

Doesn't mean a lot if you're away and the property is evidently empty.

idk....
there are plenty of ways to secure a house
tastefully done metal bars come to mind.......

also, the south end neighborhood watch has made a HUGE difference.

I like "you loot we shoot"...reminds me of my grandfathers homemade notice to cattle rustlers..that "he has a 270 rifle and others.."

The weakest part is the door. If making noise is not a problem there's no door that can withstand forced entry.
