Sandcrab-thanks for thinking about Toronto. We checked that first and the cheapest fare was around $600 to Belize City. The flight leaves so early in the am we'd have to overnight in Toronto and gets in late so again overnight in Toronto. That's US dollars for the fare. It would cost a little less but then you have to figure in about 5 hrs. total driving time. The money didn't bother me as much as the 2 days travel each way. One of these days maybe our airport will get with it and make things easier for travel to places outside the US.

bigmommachris, Have you thought about a red-eye flight out of Buffalo to Houston so you can catch the flight out of Houston? We do the red-eye out of Salt Lake City when we go to Miami and beyond, other wise we have to overnight it there. If your lucky the plane will be all but empty and you can find a better seat or even a empty row and sleep all the way there. But be forwarned, it can be a loooooooong day.

Shaygray - July 2 is also the date I want to fly down. I'll check out American's deals. I think I even have a 2 for 1 from American right now. I REALLY REALLY appreciate the stuff that everyone has posted. It helps a lot in my search. I will try the Cancun route someday but not this time. We are going to be loaded to the hilt with all the baggage they will let us on the airplane with since we are furnishing our house this trip.

Depending on where you go, each specializes in a different area. I was able to go from San Jose to Belize for $450 (although I can't remember which one of these I used) and Travelocity, expedia, etc. were showing $890.00. Consolidators are a great bet (some are listed above). Find one in your area that specializes in Mexico & Central America and they can get you a great deal!

As mentioned in other's messages, you can go to the airline that flys there and see if they have specials (Continental & American for sure)

I must be much much much older than most of you. The air fares you all are talking about seem very reasonable to me. Air fares are so cheap these days. Don't get me wrong -- I love a bargain but sometimes I cut off my nose to spite my face. Remember -- you are going to Paradise. What's it worth to you?

Do not lock yourself into a certain day or time. I too especially like American Airline and use their web page all the time. Sign up as an Advantage member and they will even Email you when they have specials. (costs nothing to sign up)

How I find the BEST fare (rather than cheapest) is to pick my ideal dates then work around them. I never pick the button "check by price." By using "check by schedule" you get more options.

They also have "multi city" schedules. I'm lucky in that there are 3 (could be 4) airports to choose from (OAK, SFO, SJO).
I can leave from Oakland, but never come back into Oakland as there is a big waster of time. I could got out of SF but would have to leave 2 hours earlier because of commute traffic. I've found it best to fly out of OAK at 6:00 AM via DFW and I'm in Belize City at 2:30'ish.
I regularly find RT for less than $550
It takes a little work, but I find it a lot of fun.
WARNING: Verify everything before you hit the "buy" button anyplace. AA lets you hold a reservation for a couple of days before you have to buy. Once you do you are locked in and it will cost you to make any changes -- like deciding to stay longer.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong but everything I have looked at from Bay Area California is at least $1000.00 per person. Is there anyone from the Bay Area that has found anything cheaper?

LisaC if you are still out there, yes I am flying from San Jose for $450. I just got another quote today and it was $485 from flycheapol.com (the one someone mentioned earlier in this message). Try that.

Just reserved a round trip flight from Denver for $500, taxes included, on the American Airlines web site. Last minute decision--I'll be there May 3.
