What has to happen for the US to go to the round of 16?

There are 2 scenarios
Lets assume both England and USA both win their game.
If both England and USA win by the exact same scoreline then USA finish top of the group and England finish 2nd.
Very simply for England to finish top they will need to win by 1 more goal than USA. ie England win 2-0 and USA win 1-0 then England win the group.

However If England win 4-3 and USA win 1-0 then England finish top of the group since they would have scored 5 goals against the USA 4 goals. (thats where you get the 3 goal difference from)
If England win 3-2 and the USA win 1-0 then we go to drawing lots since they both have the same goals scored and goal difference

Clear as mud eh?

Ok a win, not the the most impressive but a win never the less. improvement in the team but we still need to play waaaay better in the last 16.

Chris, imaterial now but goal difference comes first as a deciding factor then it's goals scored if the goal difference is the same, so all we needed to do was win by a goal more than the US to have a better goal difference.

Lets wait to see who the US and England play in the last 16.

Well done USA you deserve to go through, geat atmosphere in my local, USA game downstairs and the England game upstairs.

So that now sets it all up nicely for an England v Brazil final.
Assuming Germany wins their group we could have this "very easy" path to the final
Germany in the last 16
Argentina in the quarters
Portugal in the semis

If only we had won the group!!
