Why would they consider them illegal. Most people use them as a hobby. It's like customs confiscating a fly rod or diving equipment. Doesn't make sense.

It is not uncommon for municipalities to ban their use from public areas, citing unauthorized excavation, damage to green areas and loss of "historical" items.

We've had people with metal detectors come up on our private beach and scan under the hammocks. Hopefully, they were planning on letting us know if they found anything.
